As my 3 year plan with Telus will be over very soon I have been looking at options (and doing some math)
1: I could renew with Telus.
2: I could jump ship to Koodo and buy a phone on their 'Tab'
3: I could take out a contract with another company.
4: I could save up the money and pay cash.
Looking at option one, I considered the worst case scenario. Let's say I had to cancel very early (due to unforseen circumstances) - it would cost me:
<quote>
The cancellation charge will be the greater of: $20 multiplied by the number of months remaining in the contract term, or $100 As of November 23rd, 2009, if you subscribe to a data service with an email feature and cancel that service within the first 12 months of a 36 month contract term, an additional cancellation charge of $200 will apply. Cancellation charges must be paid whether the service is terminated by TELUS or you. If you are not on a contract term with us, there is no cancellation fee.

So, it would cost me about $900 (plus misc charges) to get out of a Telus contract (early on in its life)
Consider that you can buy many new (unlocked) Blackberry devices for less than $300 (at Puremobile) - refubrished models are sometimes even cheaper.
Telus (during the fall of last year) tagged on an extra $200 to their existing cancellation fee. This was pushed through quietly and without fanfare....
I have posted this as 'food for thought' - I visit a few forums where smartphone plans are discussed. It really does concern me that many of our young people (who are a major market force) are being taken advantage of, by the major Canadian cell phone providers.
My synopsis (at the end of the day) is to either go with Koodo or to pay cash.
