I was wondering, if I were to get a phone with only the 850 Mhz 3G band, would it work for 3G connections using the Rogers network?
I know Rogers also uses the 1900 Mhz band, but I'm not sure if both are needed or not.
(Also, do Bell and Telus also use the 850/1900 combo for their HSPA network?)

It really depends. If it is an HSPA/UMTS 850Mhz, then yes, that is all you need. But it could be GSM, GPRS, EGPRS etc.
850/1900 Mhz is the North American standard for HSPA/UMTS with the exception of a few companies using AWS frequencies.

And all of Roger's network has EDGE or 3G 850mhz available, and you will get better service using 850 than you will with 1900. It sounds like you're safe.

I think that is key here is the difference between HSPA/UMTS and the AWS frequencies.
