Does this forum have official moderators? If it does, I don't really see them and they don't appear to be doing any message post cleanups.
btw, if you need a moderator, I'd love to volunteer.

I was wondering the same thing... I've been really annoyed the last few days with the ridiculous amount of spam posts/threads out there...
I would gladly volunteer as a moderator, you just beat me to it =D

Agreed I created a post about this a few months ago. I think there are only a handful but hey if you need anymore i'm ready and willing

There are moderators. I have seen spam posts get deleted. They probably just take some time and may not necessarily be monitoring these forums 7x24.

Logically, Stuntman seems to be on the mark. We're all people and spambots aren't, so we're not 24/7. They're most likely just volunteers who do this when they've got the free time to hop on for a few. Much like the others, I don't mind volunteering as well.

I'm wondering if these are spam bots of people posting the spam... If its spa bots, perhaps the site needs to upgrade their account creation/posting to require a CAPTCHA... Even if the first post in any one day requires a CAPTCHA, that would help stop the bots...

CAPTCHA seem to be the way to go these days. More and more sites are heading that direction.

I believe the site does have captcha on signup.

Well all you need is one person to go computer to computer and input a captcha
Another idea would be somewhat what XDA does, limit you till you get 10 posts, like say till you get 10 posts you can't post links and all comments have to be approved by a moderator. After 10 posts they are full members

I regularly have posts rejected, usually the ones that contain one (or more) ouside links. None of them contain any foul language or are in any way connected to advertising.
The very simplistic posts however seem to be allowed :)

Hi all,
First, thanks for the patience with the spam, it's constant and working on several fixes. There are some things planned from a site redesign perspective that we'll be doing. A better comment system on the main site, better category placements and a better review sections. Lots of exciting things the works!
One item that we're considering implementing is a simple login system for both the main site and the forum section. This would be ideal, but would also mean that we'd have to build a new Forum section - and this Forum section would merge/close with a brand spanking new forum section.
Curious how you all feel about going this route? I believe it'll be more secure and much more intuitive. Let me know what you think... it wouldn't happen for a month or two (but the main site changes are happening within a month)

That is a good idea (IMO) - currently I maintain two bookmarks, one for the forums, and the other for MobileSyrup (proper)

Good idea on redesigning the main website and the forums, it will help this site grow. By putting a login on the main site it might deter lazy people from signing up for an account to be able to view the main site, the login part for the forum is near perfect, only other thing that could help the spam is the addition of captcha when posting as people have mentioned earlier in this post.
Few of my thoughts for the redesign of the site and forums would be to add 5-10 most recent forums posts on the main site to the right of the blog posts so when you load the main page you can see what people are talking bout in the forums and at the same time it will promote the forum section. Another thing could be to remove or move the mobile employee discussions since when you look at the post count it seems no one is posting there, it doesnt really deserve its own section.
Another idea would be to add a custom software section where people could get more info and idea how and why you would customize your phone, it would have similar topics that are found in android discussion now but doesn't have to be android only.
One last thought would be to make the new forum easier to navigate, since when you load this forum for the first time you get what it looks like a big list, it could be confusing for some. Somehow rearrange/separate the sections differently so that when people wanna go to carrier discussion they click on it and than they can view the subsections that are under that link. That way people can navigate to which section in the forums they wanna go , and not have the whole list of 20+ links in front of them.
Thanks for the heads up on site redesign Ian , nice to know that site owners do care about this site, and looking at ways to improve it.

A unified login system would be nice. It may even draw more people into the forums. It would be a shame if all the posts from the current database were lost in the process, but if that's what it takes then so be it.
The spam must be a pain the butt for you guys. Forum/site upgrades can be a hassle but hopefully it will save admin some time in the long run.

Spam and the lack of traffic on this forum bugs me. For the past month, everytime I visit the forum, there's spam. Got so annoyed, I went to go play angry birds on the new SGIILTE. It's the few usual guys/gals that are on this forum helping and chatting it up which is great. I think with the few of us MS addicts, we pretty respectful towards each other's comments.
I think merging the main site and the forum would definitely be beneficial for forum traffic and mobilesyrup growth. I've just been telling others to come visit this site. The content on the main page is relevant and simple.
I would like to see if the forum can be enabled for Tapatalk use.
I wouldn't mind being a Mod. Assistant just to clean up the spam and stuff and cleaning up the posts. Being a moderator is just too stressful ;)

I'd hate to lose the previous messages that have been posted in the forum. I think the main site does need some login system as it is currently very easy to post as someone else and say some pretty nasty things without repercussion. As for avoiding spam, XDA does it right with limiting the first 10 posts to only certain general areas before you can go ahead and post in others. Combined with a CAPTCHA system when you first sign up, would cut down on the spam here.
Looking forward to the redesign.

As long as current conversations were still accessible, I think any innovation is fantastic. :D

I'd be very happy to see the two combined. One advantage would be the ability to post comments on articles under the same name as on forum. Would help to grow a bit more community. Could even look at linking the profiles to facebook, google+, twitter, etc. I'm not a huge social networker, but I can see the advantage from the perspective of the company.

One thing I'd like to put forward, though, is the ability to have different avatars between the forum and the comments sections... Not that we have avatars with the forum now, but making sure the web design incorporates the two objects as two separate entities would be nice. (in the event avatars ever get introduced to the forum)
