As a communications device, you probably want Facebook, Twitter and any other apps for the social networks you are on.
For news feeds, I recommend Pulse and Taptu.
For sound profile control, I recommend Volume Widget. I use it to turn off notification sounds (from email and social networks) when I go to sleep and turn these sounds back on when I wake up.
For sports, I recommend Score Mobile. It has a great widget and has many sports sources.
For weather, I recommend The Weather Network.

Juice Defender - helps save battery power
Stumble Upon - finds things on the net that you check off as your interests
Gas Buddy - locate the cheapest gas in your area
Tune In Radio - Huge selection of radio stations from all over North America
Soundhound or Shazzam - detects which song and artist is playing (for those "who sings this?" moments)
Beautiful Widgets - Very nice weather app/widget
Ponyt - Find things to do, what movies are playing, where to eat etc
SketchMe Pro - turn your nice photos into sketches
Various Camera apps (FxCamera, Retro Camera, Paper Camera are some of my most used)
Out of Milk - Make a grocery list quickly, keep a pantry list etc
Various Games

Call Confirm - stops accidental one touch / pocket dialing
Websharing - access your SD card over wireless from PC web browser. I like this before, but the Galaxy Nexus doesn't support usb mounting, so this is essential to me now. Going to buy Pro.
Network Switcher - turns wifi/data radio on/off based on list of rules.
Audio Galaxy or similar cloud music service - Your music anywhere. Going to make SD storage obsolete one day.
