I have 30 Mbps down load speed and 15 Mbps upload internet service with Bell/Aliant FibreOP.
I typically get a ping of 45 to 50 ms, download of 31 Mbps and Upload of 11 Mbps from my PC.
With my Galaxy Nexus I have seen as low as .874 Down/1.3 Up and I have also seen 3 down with a whopping 13.4 Up.
All speeds with speedtest.net.
What is the expected download speed on an "n" router?

I might suggest that you try a different speed test just to eliminate variables other than you/your device. speedtest.net is probably the most popular and presumable the best, but for me personally I get very strange and inaccurate results from it very similar to what you reported (eg up speed > down speed). Speed test results can depend on many things: the app, your hardware, your provider, distance from the target server, other network traffic... shape of the tubes, ?, etc.
Try xtreme labs speed test as an alternative. See if the results are more consistent and reasonable than what you've observed so far.

jimmy try selecting a different server in speed test, one that is closer to you.

Tried different servers. No better luck. Also tried test on SGN, then my PC, then my Nexus again. No background downloads either.
Waiting to try xtreme test.
Thanks all for help.

Do you get similar results if you try the test over 4G rather than your wifi/LAN connection? What about if you try connecting to a different router? If your router is dual band, can you try to force it to work at 2.4ghz rather than 5ghz?
Your N router should be faster than the 30/15mbps service you have, so 30/15mbps would be the 'ceiling' I'd expect.
I don't have the Nexus yet, but hopefully next week. I'll share my experiences then.

After a week with the Nexus I'm not seeing the same problems that you had. I'm getting speed test results from the device comparable to the desktop. That's using a newer model Linksys router. I did notice some signal issues when I was visiting my parents. I had set them up with a very old Netgear router, and side by side with my HTC Desire I notice that the Desire got a slightly stronger signal everywhere in the house. So perhaps there is still some bugs in the wifi radio that Google still have to work out for compatibility with a wide range of routers. I have no idea, just speculating.

Thanks for the info.
What is your desktop speed vs the SGN speed?

I think now its the distance from my router. Next to router I'm OK. Maybe will move router.
