So I got it yesterday. Came unlocked from virgin mobile.
Any reason to root it ? I figure not since it's running icecream sandeich.
Also, what is the best case for this ?

Right now there isn't really reason to root , unless you want to get rid of any bell bloat ware , not sure if they added anything or not. But once custom roms and custom kernels come out you will definetly benefit from rooting your phone so you can install them.

There's lots of reasons to root, especially with a Nexus phone.

Is that not pre-installed? I heard a couple of American carriers were having it removed/blocked but I thought we'd be ok.
