Okay, so here's the deal. Right now, I have an LG Voyager with Telus, which runs on the CDMA network. Now, if I wanted to upgrade to a 3G+ device, such as the Nokia e71, how would that work? I am willing to buy the phone outright, but will I recieve a SIM Card? Will my account information be transfered onto this SIM card? Will they do it for me even if I do not buy a device from them? Thank you in advance.

I recently switched from Mike (iden) to HSPA. The sim card came with the phone (HTC Hero, bought out right). I had to input all my old contacts on my own.
It was pretty easy as I have a gmail account and all I did was input all my contacts into my Google contacts and then had the HTC Hero sync with my account and all my contacts where there for me.
I now manage my contacts through my gmail account as this is a guarantee back up if anything happens to my phone.

So when you switched to the HTC Hero, you didn't need to change your contract or anything? And Telus activated the SIM and everything for you?

Nope, if you buy the phone outright, all you need to do is activate it.
One thing to keep in mind though, is that you will need a data plan :)
Pay per use data is expensive.

Perfect. Thank you both for your help.

is there a charge for switching. Heard it's something like 35 bucks

$25...or 10 online
why on earth is there a cost to this, something like switching within a carrier should be free?

I agree if you do it online, it should be free. Calling in is a different story.
People should understand that there is an initial cost to any call center when you call in. So for instance, when you call TELUS, it might cost them $12 right off the bat.
With an HSPA device, you won't need to worry about that in the future. :)

^ I can see your point but if you are already with the carrier is should be part of the customer service and the charge be eaten by TELUS.

is there something else you are not letting us know about?

No. With an HSPA phone, you just swap the SIM card. No need to do anything else.
I am liking all the new devices that are coming out, just wish prices would come down

It's very simple, they just give you a SIM Card, and it's as if you were just switching from any CDMA device to an other one, except now, if you switch phones, you move the SIM card from one to the other.
