I plan on moving from my black berry bold and buying myself an android phone pretty soon. I have a few friends around the world i talk to on my black berry messenger (bbm) I'd like to keep talking to these friends but text is limited to my country. So i am wondering if people know if their is a working app that allows me to talk to my non converting friends?

No, you can't run BBM or any other app that lets you message your BBM contacts.

However, there have been rumours swirling in the past couple of months that Blackberry is going to launch an android app that would do just that. Even some screenshots popped up online but I still wouldn't put much faith in the idea until either Android or BB officially announce something.

Have a look through the android marketplace at texting apps..

Oh there's loads of cross-platform messaging apps, but they just don't work with BBM. Your BB friends would have to install one of these other apps as well, such as Kik (my preference, works 100% like BBM), LiveProfile, Whatsapp, etc...

And that's why I think it will never happen. BBM is such selling feature for some that it keeps them from switching. Unless they managed to get some serious cash for licensing I think Blackberry would be crazy to let their biggest advantage go cross-platform.

ill convince my friends to download the best app before converting. But flagg is right bbm is such a great free experience its all blackberry has. talking to my american friends for free is also awesome. Not to mention the amount of picture s i receive and send daily, witch would probably be better on a sony xperia arc or htc sensation

I switched from Blackberry to Android this Saturday.

On Android you can use Facebook Messenger App here. (http://www.facebook.com/mobile/messenger)

Or you can use Skype that you can get here. (http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-mobile/skype-mobile/android/)

well if ever blackberry fails on their bb 10 phones i can assure you that they will be selling their servers. and bum will be available cross platform. you will see bbm one day on an android phone. may not be free but it will be there, apple won't buy it since they got their iMessage and windows, they might try and get a piece of it.
so it all depends on what will happen to RIM. i am sure they will split their divisions and sell their services like BES to companies regardless of their phones. bbm...
RIM will always be alive, but they will never be the powerhouse they once was back in 08.

but i could be completely wrong and the co-ceo's burn the company to the ground, or make it big on bb10, but i have a feeling it won't unfortunately, as much as i want to see a canadian company do some good. i fear they already failed and won't be able to make it back.
