View Full Version : Rogers won't commit to updating Android phones to new OS versions

Recently a growing group of upset Rogers Android customers on Twitter and in various blogs have been trying to find out from Rogers whether or not they will properly support Android phones going forward with updates to the operating system.
At the moment our phones are all stuck on ver 1.5 of the OS, however, ver 1.6 has been available since the beginning of October. (In fact, 2.0 is now out in other countries, and they are working on 2.1). By comparison, US customers had their phones updated OTA (Over the air) starting in the beginning of Oct.
For the past couple of weeks, many of us have been emailing and calling the various levels of customer and tech support at Rogers trying to get some answers, and unfortunately we're not getting any sort of commitment from them (or even correct information).
At the moment, according to multiple reps in the Office of the President (OotP) Rogers will be getting the update from HTC around the end of Dec for testing and evaluation, and we _might_ get an update in the new year.
One forum posters says he spoke to someone else in the OotP who accused Android users of wanting Android 1.6 so we could "hack" our phones (obviously not someone who understands how these phones work) and stated that Rogers would NOT be issuing updates for the Dream, and possibly not even for the magic. We are still trying to corroborate this information.
Calls and emails to customer and tech support often result in the erroneous information that 1.6 can be downloaded right now from the Rogers web site. This is NOT TRUE. The file available for download from Rogers site is a minor bug fix/security update from August.
It is very important that we get these operating system updates. New OS updates mean new functionality, not to mention that apps are beginning to appear in the Market Place that do NOT work on ver 1.5!
Rogers sold us phones telling us they would be cutting edge, but instead we are getting phones that are quickly becoming obsolete.

Any reason why you don't just update it yourself? It isn't that hard...

As Kronk mentioned, you should be able to do this on your own without Rogers. Rogers doesn't have any real obligation to keep your phone "cutting edge" either. It's like telling them to make your Startac 75 run Android 2.0.

Actually your information is wrong. HTC has all there devices right now running 1.5. The Tmobile G1 only got 1.6 because its a google experience phone. We will not get a new version until HTC pushes out 2.01 or 2.1 for there sense platform. HTC has already stated there skipping 1.6 so we just have to wait.

They won't 'push' it out. You are correct.
For a person who has a little know how, it isn't hard to do the upgrade to 1.6.
Either way, 1.6 doesn't have much of an improvment over 1.5.
I'd say buy a new phone :)

isn't this an HTC issue and not Rogers
Yes it is. Htc said 1.6 was not worth there effort to update to there sense platform so they skipped it witch means none of there phones would get it. Tmobile g1 ( aka Htc Dream ) got it because its a google experience phone and is managed by google not htc. We just have to wait for HTC to push out the update

@Brendanmurphey: You are confusing two different issues, we are not asking that Rogers update our phones with Sense UI, we are asking that they update them to 1.6 (or even better, 2.0).
Many of us in the forum I linked to in my initial post have been in touch with both HTC and Rogers. The current official responses have been as follows:
From HTC - HTC makes the updates available to carriers, and if carriers want them, they have to request them.
From Rogers - Rogers is supposed to be getting the update from HTC to "test and evaluate" in late December, and _might_ release the update to customers in the new year.
You don't have to take my word for it, you can contact HTC and Rogers like we did. If you visit the forum I linked to, you will see we have all discussed our correspondence with HTC and Rogers, and even pasted emails into our posts.
As for any added benefit from 1.6, quite simply, there are now apps in the Market Place that _only_ work with 1.6 and above, so Rogers customers can not use those apps. That alone is reason to want the update.
As for why we don't just root the phones, there are two responses: 1. Not everyone is comfortable doing this (either because they are not computer savvy, or because they don't want to brick their phone) 2. We should not have to root the phone to get proper functionality, and risk bricking the phone (which would not be covered by Rogers warranty) if we tried to root it.
As for whether or not Rogers has an obligation to keep our phones "cutting edge" consider that in all of their advertising for this phone we are led to believe that we are getting a smart phone that will be able to run all sorts of apps, and be as awesome as having an iPhone. Rogers iPhone users get upgrades, and if the trend in creating apps for Android continue to support only new OS versions going forward, eventually we may not be able to get apps. (In fact some devs remove their old app versions from the MP when they create versions for the newer OS).
You can't compare this to a dumb phone. Smart phones as a platform are meant to be like computers in a way that dumb phones never were. They are expected to function as more than a phone, more like having a PDA combined with a phone, or a computer that can also be used as a phone.
Why should Android customer expect anything less than what iPhone customers get?

Rogers is still selling the HTC Dream, Magic and LG Eve with Android 1.5. So being a Canadian if you want to purchase a phone that is running Android, The retailer (Rogers in this case) is selling you an outdated piece of equipment. In many cases all we are asking is for Rogers to step up to the plate and provide the product that they sold us. They are selling these phones as the latest and greatest when in fact they are already obsolete when you purchase them.
I believe that the only other Android phones in the Canadian market right now are the HTC Hero with Tellus and the Samsung Galaxy with Bell, both of which are running Android 1.5. In the case of the Hero I believe that HTC is skipping 1.6 and 2.0 to go directly to 2.1 on it, but it remains to be seen if Tellus will update their version of the phone. In the case of the Galaxy it's the manufacture that is not providing any updates to the phone.

at the very least HTC or Rogers/Bell/TELUS should inform us of when the update MIGHT happen

I think it's up to the owner of the device to upgrade. Just like other said above. Carriers just want your money for the device and price plans the give you "good customer service". Nothing more. :(

I can tell you TELUS will update the 2.x when it comes out with HTC's Sense UI.
As for Rogers, they may or may not.
Just upgrade it yourself. The onus is on the consumer to be informed about this kind of stuff, just as much as it is on Rogers.
Further more, HTC is the company making the decision to skip 1.6 for the Magic. Rogers isn't going to go through all their inventory and reflash the Magic with 1.6. HTC is still manufaturing them with 1.5.
If you want it so badly, then upgrade yourself. All this time spent discussing it could have been used to do the upgrade.
If you need help doing it, just send me a msg. I'll give you some instructions.

Actually no im not confusing it. HTC said that they will not develop or optimize 1.6 for 1 device. There waiting till 2.1 or 2.01 or whatever to develop for all there devices. You obviously misunderstood this

They saw no need to support 1.6 and 2.0 because there would not enough new things that would make sense to update sense ui for and why would they give 1.6 to one device and 2.0 for another but not all? Actually, I don't need help upgrading it. By upgrading you are talking about rooting the phone and installing a custom ROM, why should I have to do that just to enable my phone to do what Rogers said it could do when I bought it.
Yes HTC is responsible for creating the 1.6 ROM for the phone but they will not create ROGERS custom ROM without ROGERS first requesting and paying for the work, just like T-Mobile did in the US and other carriers did around the world.
But all that aside, The main complaint is that ROGERS is not forthcoming with information on weather they will or will not upgrade any of the current Android devices in their lineup. And if they have no plans to offer any upgrades, their prospective customer should be able to be informed of this. ROGERS does not inform their own customer support personnel nor any of their authorized distributors of their intentions.
Go ahead and ask a distributer if the device will be kept up to date or if it has been crippled in any way and see what kind of answer you get. Either you will get met with a dumbfounded look or handed a line of BS just so that they can make the sale to you.

Wow. Just.... wow. You are really very misinformed.
Here are some facts. A quick search of the web, or an email to HTC will confirm them, so if you _choose_ not to believe me, then this conversation has become pointless:
1. HTC did not, and is not skipping Android 1.6 for the HTC Dream and the HTC Magic. HTC _already made_ the 1.6 update for the HTC Dream (G1) and the HTC Magic (MyTouch). IT EXISTS! (In case there is any confusion, Sense UI and the Android OS are NOT the same thing).
2. US customers of T-Mobile received this update to their G1s (Dream) and MyTouch's (Magic) OTA (over the air) from T-MOBILE starting in the beginning of October.
3. HTC will not give Rogers customers the 1.6 OS update directly because Rogers customizes the OS Roms. According to HTC Rogers must request (and purchase) the 1.6 stock ROM _from_ HTC in order to customize it.
4. According to the Office of the President of Rogers (confirmed with _multiple_ people) Rogers will be receiving the update _from_ HTC by the end of December so they can test and evaluate it, after which they might decide to customize it and release it.
5. _If_ Rogers decides to customize and release 1.6, they will do so by making a file available on the ROGERS' web site for customers to download and install on their own.
No one is suggesting Rogers go back and update the firmware on "each" phone. Rogers will (if they release it) put it on their web site, and _we_ will download it and install it _ourselves_.
Let me say this again, because you didn't understand it the first time... HTC did NOT skip 1.6 for the Dream and Magic. T-Mobile users have it because T-Mobile bought it from HTC and released it. Rogers is testing it this month, and might release it in the new year.
This has nothing to do with Sense UI, we don't care about Sense UI.
As for "installing it ourselves now without Rogers" that would require rooting the phone. we don't want to root our phones. we don't care how easy it is, we don't want to do it.
These things I have typed above, they are not my opinion, they are FACT! Get it?

I agree there are better phones coming to Canada for Android, but I can't afford to buy a new one (much to my chagrin).
Doesn't change the fact that regardless of the suckiness of any of these phones, the update exists, Rogers needs to get it from HTC to give to us, and so far they refuse to confirm if/when they will do this.

Hi. Great rumor! They never let anybody know till the last minute. I pestered Telus for news on an Android phone for months...nothing, so I paid the ETF and went with Rogers. About 2 weeks later Telus announced their Android phone. Now I'm stuck with a Magic that Rogers won't update.
Do you believe your rumor to be plausible or are you wishing?

Rogers, Rogers, Rogers.......
I guess Rogers really does not care to catch on the android wave and support their products they would just rather sell us new phones. Well all this negative publicity in regards to android will cause new users to look elsewhere due to the lack of support and spend their money with another company. I have no desire to support Rogers when they will not even stand by their own products.
It is very baffling why Rogers would not support the HTC Dream / Magic and update to version 1.6 and eventually 2.0 and so on. Android is the fastest growing market in smart phones and leaving their customers with old OS will ensure that Canada lags behind in Android support.
HTC, HTC, HTC
Well all the blame cannot go to Rogers either cause at the end of the day this is a HTC phone and is obvious they just want to sell handsets but by allowing carriers to not provide updates for the phones they certainly are hurting their image and will cause android users to look at others brands as well.
Great OS but.......You need to learn a thing or two from the iphone and that you need to rollout these updates across the board on these phones just not ones you brand and make. Failing to do so is a major mistake and will cost you in the long run. While android may be taking off and getting a larger market share how do you think the sales are going to be in a few years when android owners are tired of being handcuffed from the carriers and manufactures of your phones by poor support....I love my android phone but i tell you a unlocked iphone is looking allot more attractive to me specially in the long run....Having updates for the android is what makes the Google experience much richer and with carriers not supporting 1.6 or 2.0 android is sure to upset many customers as it has done in Canada already.
In the mean time putting pressure on Rogers and all the negative press they are going to receive on this and loss of revenue may force their hands to actually do something about it instead of responding with their generic corporate responses.
If need be the Android users of Rogers who have the HTC Dream, Magic and EVE will pursue this diligently.
All i have to say is thank god my contract is up this summer ....Nexus One, Wind, Dave, Public Mobile will all get a chance to get my money since Rogers has proven all they care about is your money not customer satisfaction.
To educate yourself more on this topic and find out all that has been done and said by the customers, Rogers, HTC regarding Android updates for Canadian users please read the forums.

No news from the CDMA providers yet, so you still should have analog roaming for now
Why would you want to roam in analog, when Rogers/Telus/Bell have now almost completely overlayed their analog with digital 800/1900?

Where did that comment come from? lol
I don't think you can say 'CDMA providers' now....TELUS & Bell have HSPA+ networks too :) Their networks have a much larger 3G footprint too!
Back on topic... I do agree that Rogers should consider rolling out the upgrade, but Google needs to step it up as well.
If Google had an iTunes/Desktop Manager program for upgrades, they would be on par with the other competitors. Android isn't selling as fast as BB's or iPhones because people don't know what it is or how it works.
I let a few people test the HTC Hero and some of the responses I got were 'This is confusing!' or 'why does it have so many icons?'. Now, I will give them a break, because the Hero (with Sense UI) does appear to have a lot going on when you boot it up, but the average user isn't going to embrace Android as well as an iPhone or Blackberry.
Android still has a long way to go before it will be on par with other smartphone OS's.
That being said, I still love it :)
Nexus One looks like a Sprint HTC Hero combined with an HTC Touch (1st gen) and I REALLY dislike that. I don't know if anyone else agrees...
