iPhone 4S and CDMA

Does anyone know for sure that the new iPhone in Canada has CDMA built in like the US version does. It shows up on the details on the US Apple site but not the Canadian one.

I am wondering because we are having trouble with local towers here on GSM but the old CDMA towers are working as normal. I know the data would not be the same but it is so slow on 3G right now that it is basically useless anyway. Just wondering if the new phone is able to switch and use CDMA when the GSM tower is overloaded or even if I have to switch manually in the settings.

To my knowledge all iPhone 4S's are GSM and CDMA, I think mostly for ease of manufacturing (one model for all providers, everywhere), however as far as I can tell there is no way to actively switch between the GSM network and the CDMA network. CDMA networks work off of the devices IMEI or ICCID, not the SIM card, which would have to be separately registered with your provider.

As the above post says they have CDMA but I very much doubt you would be able to get it activated for CDMA on a Canadian carrier unless you know someone on the "inside"
