I see lots of complaining and half-arsed solutions to syncing the Pre with an exchange server. I have to buy some units for my organization will either go with the Pre or a BB. I know BB has BES and that works well, I would love to give the Pre a go, but I fear you won't know if it will sync properly until you buy it and try it. Anyone have any stories or advice.

Rumours from where? I'm generally in the know when it comes to the WebOS and I've heard no such rumours.
And I'm not too sure I agree with your ***ertion that Blackberry is more stable. It's certainly more feature-full, but I'm not sure it's any more stable than the Pre.
In regards to exchange support, I've heard it's quite good, though it's temporarily broken with the 1.2 update and a 1.2.1 fix is expected soon

"When your smartphone drops from $249 to $79 over a summer, you have to wonder what’s going on. Two rumors are circulating this AM, one that Palm is laying off folks, perhaps in the Windows Mobile team."

From a Palm employee: http://twitter.com/foxycar/status/4502959288
"Will Palm lay off employees?" http://www.webosarena.com/2009/09/30/will-palm-lay-off-employees-as-pre-sales-diminish/ (via @WebOSArena). In a word, no.
Though it does make sense moving personnel from the now extinct WinMo section of Palm Inc. to the WebOS side.
Also, I'd like to point out its the retailers lowering the Pre's price (which some suspect is to try and get the current batches out in the market so in a few months they can offer a 16gb version

Update: Given our price plan options it would be much more cost effective for us to go with a Blackberry device than another device. I can get unlimited data access on a BB for $52 a month vs $95 for 1GB with a non-BB device.
