Hey Folks,

So i got word today that the Pre will be coming to TELUS (HSPA Style) soon as well as the EOS/Pixie (later this year).

Engadget posted the official photos/videos earlier today (right after i got word at work).

I am way more excited for the EOS then the Pre (even though the Pre will be HSPA on TELUS (which means WAY faster then the CDMA variant)

I'm pretty disappointed in the Pixi specs...2mp camera, no wifi, smaller screen...

Is this the poor man's WebOS device?

It's a Palm, what did you actually expect?

It is a huge leap forward from their Centro series (which they are trying to replace).

Camera/lack of wifi aren't a big issue for me. I never use them on my phones.

I expected at least the same features as the Pre, if not better. If WebOS is to develop to become a true competitor, I expect the hardware to be up to snuff.

I personally don't carry around my DSLR everywhere so having a camera on my phone really helps. Wifi is also a cost-saver. For an economy-based phone, lack of WiFi really doesn't make sense.

Can't wait for Palm to come out with a smartphone they can call their flagship. They admit that the Pre isn't it.

As a Centro-successor, this could be a HUGE hit.

Considering the Centro was priced around $99, if the Pixi is too, it go get a large segment of "average users". The majority of non-tech-head friends I know only use their Blackberries and Nokias for texting and facebook, to them, wifi is a non-issue.

I agree.

Palm devices were not as user friendly as other mid-range phones. The new Web OS makes it easy for the average user to navigate.

I think this phone is going to sell very well. A lot better then the Pre.

is the keyboard bigger or small than the Pre?

From what people are saying, it's more cramped, but better quality keys.

From PreCentral (http://www.precentral.net/palm-pixi-first-impressions-and-hands-video):
The Keyboard: passable, but very small. It's slightly narrower than the Pre's keyboard, but still larger than the teensy keyboard on the Centro. Size aside (and I know that size will be an issue), the keyboard feels much better than the Pre's keyboard. The keys click in much more satisfyingly and much more responsively.

IMO, I would actually prefer the Palm logo to sit where the gesture area is. It just looks so empty.

That's the gesture area, but I don't see why they couldn't paint something over it.

I see what you're saying but I would not want a palm logo staring me in the face all the time. Would be cool is the user could customize that area

I highly doubt it. Palm's future is dead at this point unfortunately. I don't think Bell even has the GSM version of the Pre, let alone the Pixi. Not to sound like a negative nancy, but I wouldn't hold out for it, considering Palm might just be a brand owned by RIM in the near future.

Correct, Bell only has a CDMA/1xRTT/EVDO version of the Pre.

If I recall correctly, a number of analysts actually valued Palm's stock at $0 recently and Palm has been a rumored acquisition target for a number of companies for awhile now. It's funny how they created so much buzz for the webOS before...and now the momentum is totally gone. I actually quite like the webOS platform.

you think that Palm will actually be out of business. Would be a shame

Palm failed by wasting 2 years doing nothing. By launching 1 phone on 1 network in 1 country, than rolling out another phone on a couple more networks over the year is the wrong business model. If the Pre was available on Verizon/Sprint/Bell/Telus at launch, and around the world with the GSM version a month or two later, they MIGHT have survived. However, in almost 2 years, they've finally announced their final rollouts, and doubled the memory. I think the best they can hope for now is having the brand and trademarks bought out by RIM or Nokia.

umm
what?

The Pre was released June 2009
sooo according to my math, it hasn't even been a year since the Pre was released.

with significant OS updates (avg. 1 per month)

Palm will be fine

It's been talked about for almost 2 years. It was shown off at CES 2009, but people were getting excited about it during the Summer of 2008. The only phone that took longer to develop, and under impressed was the Garmin Nuvifon. If Palm makes it through 2010 I'll be surprised.

2 years?

No one ever knew about webOS or what Palm was up to up until the CES 2009 announcement. That's why it made such a huge splash. People thought Palm was announcing the end of Palm at CES 2009.

Palm will make it through 2010 easily

Regardless of dates, Palm has been dying for a while now. Their stock went up about 20% today because VZW slashed the prices on the Pre and Pixi, but its unlikely they will make it through the year if they just try to push the same old hardware.

perhaps a good time to buy the stock and then sell when it goes up on a daily basis

With windows announcing their Kin phones, I don't expect Telus to take on Palm devices. Telus must be hearing about all the defective phones people keep having to send back. They won't want to deal with that, and I can see now why Bell is the only carrier taking on Palm......they have the money to do it.

Hopefully it will come
