Effective August 21, 2009, a minimum tenure of 24 months since initial activation or last upgrade will be required before a customer is eligible to participate in the hardware upgrade program. This change aligns all upgrades (voice, voice to data and data to data) with the current data to data HUP policy.
According to the internal bulletin, Rogers is implementing the change to the HUP for two reasons.
Rogers Wireless heavily invests in providing the latest data devices at affordable prices to our data customers. This update to the Hardware Upgrade Program is designed to offer a consistent upgrade eligibility to an outstanding selection of the most advanced devices for the best value.
In addition to the outstanding selection of available devices, there has also been improved level of quality and technology that has gone into the line-up over the past years allowing a longer hardware lifespan.
I always love reading companies internal documentations as there is always a few sentences that give you a good chuckle. Take this one from the Rogers’ bulletin for example.
This change also reinforces the importance of explaining to customers that HUP eligibility and quoted hardware/plan pricing are subject to change without notice and cannot be guaranteed beyond the time of quotation.

this is all standard stuff that happens every year. Nothing different and I'm sure they are doing all the greedy things before the new players come in

is this 2-year the same a Bell and TELUS?

In that case, they should just limit contract lengths to two years like every other country in the world. Then there wouldn't really be an issue.

^maybe the new carriers would do that, then Rogers, Bell and TELUS would follow for once

I'm not sure what the big deal with everything is...
- Read and understand before you sign
- If you don't like your carrier's policies, switch. If you can't afford to, you shouldn't have signed what you signed in the first place.
- If you don't want any long term contracts, buy out your phone.
- If you can't afford to buy out a phone, then that's just the position you're in. Nothing is really free.
- Eventually the carrier with the most favorable policies and pricing wins.

Agreed!
TELUS will give you $150 off after a year of service and a full renewal after 2.
Bell is similar.
Rogers is now the worst. Oh have the mighty fallen. They use to have the best upgrade program.
I have a feeling they are feeling the preside of not being the best in town

Rogers as far as i'm concerned is still strong of the 3 in the north. Only with rogers do you get satisfactory customer service. Northern' tel's upgrades are 2 months before your contract expries, so being able to do one at 2 years when your on a 3 isnt all that bad. That pricing after one year isn't even great, not really worth it in my opinion. Now customers can upgrade every 2 years get wicked pricing, seems like a pretty reasonable change to me!

Well $150 at the other companies is better then being told to go buy a $600 phone at full price. lol...Which is now what Rogers is doing.
What if you break you blackberry? You can't afford $600 for a new one, so you buy a regular phone for $400. Then they charge you the ECF for data in the first year. You then paid $500 for a new phone.
As long as your phone breaks after the first year i guess your fine.

Northern Tel and Bell you are told to buy a new phone too. I just went through the process it was either $200 to fix my ph one or go buy a new one full retail. If you phone breaks within the first year at Rogers, depending on what third party store it is, they have insurance for phones, which means that 2nd year you have the phone anything happens the insurance is there to cover you. Rogers wont leave their customer hanging without helping them, or at least trying everything in their power to help.

600 for a phone? what would be the customers fault for wanting to spend that. they're are many phones 100 times cheaper than that. not to mention other providers are the same way Bell, fixes phones for $200 or there as well you can go buy a phone full retail. At least with Rogers' depending on where you get the phone extended insurance may be an option which would hold you over to the 2 year mark, which is a bonus!!

That is true, there are cheaper phones out there.
What i am talking about is if you have a Blackberry or iPhone or WinMo device and you break your phone.
You have a few options. You can buy a new regular phone and be charged $100 to cancel your data plan if it is in the first year. If you don't want to be charged that $100, you have to buy a new smartphone.
There is insurance on phones, not to be confused with an extended warranty.
You can buy cell insurance from most insurance providers. It is worth it if you have an expensive phone.

Of course the insurance is worth it. The one that I am familiar with is $34.95 and thats a years worth of insurance, even if your phone is only worth $200..... its cheaper to pay the insurance one time than it is to buy a new phone.

Anyone on Rogers thinking about switching to Wind?
Elsie

How would be a scam? Of course the insurances dont cover liquid damages, or anyother personal damages, but they do cover all manufacture's defects which is a bonus, especailly seeing as the standward warranty on a phone is only 1 yr, so bringing up to equal 2 years for only one payment seems like a steal of a deal to me.
