Went to Square One to the kiosk to grab me a Galaxy S2. We did the credit check but they wanted a $400 security deposit. Holy crap!! I might as well buy the phone outright for an extra $200. Maybe because I just financed a new car? I guess I would need to contact equifax to find out? Either way I walked away empty handed.

Six months you get the csh back and a massive boost to your credit, but your pyments must be on time.

Should add that even if you buy the phone outright you still have to pay the deposit if you are signing up to be a customer.

I would call Virgin directly... the person could have typed in your info wrong or anything is possible...

I've seen people at Rogers get the same $400 deposit requested that were people with great credit and they called in and got the deposit removed.

well thinking about it over the last few days, I decided tha Koodo is the way to go. I mean the plans are pretty impressive for the price. Thinking of just buying a used nexus s for 300-350 cause I know Il want some newer one within the year so it will give me an easy way to upgrade. lol

If you want to spend $300, why not grab a Panache from Mobilicity with full warranty, then go month to month with cheaper rates....?

Koodo has the NEXUS S for $350 retail now. $200 up front and $150 tab.
Better off doing that than buying used and pay the same price.

I thought about it but I figured they would ask for a stupid deposit. Koodo told me if I get a used phone, or purchased at full price with them, still need to run a credit check. So I don't know. I just didnt want to be tied down in anyway because with these cool phones coming, i want to be able to switch when I want.

$400? Ouch. The most I ever saw with a customer was $250.

I think I might know why you got the deposit you did though, and it's not because your credit is bad. You'd have to message me about it (if you're curious).

As for getting deposits back, you do get them back if you pay your bills on time for 6 months straight with Virgin. In addition to that, your credit score goes up by 50 points. After a year of consecutive payments, your credit should increase by another 25 points (for a total of 75 points).

If you buy it outright at Virgin Mobile, you will still have a credit check, and the SAME deposit, FYI. Deposits you get back when you pay your bill in full on time six months in a row.

It would seem unfair to have to pay a deposit for something already paid for in full. What is the deposit for (I wonder) and how do they justify it.......

I think a deposit/not approved on a COAM is more than fair. I don't agree it should be as high, or just have a spending cap. But people would bring in COAM and just rack up high bills and not pay. It was the same thing with SuperTab on the LG 230 and why they got rid of it on the 230 and the stunt. Too many people were racking up bills, and not paying. It sucks, but that's the way she goes.

Virgin is pretty lenient. Doing them side by side, Telus is usually $1000 if Virgin is $200.

Not much to do about it, either call Equifax or just go prepaid.

You must have some pretty bad credit if Virgin demanded a 400$ deposit... Bell asked me for a 400$ deposit, so I decided I'd give Virgin and they apparently have much lower credit demands that at Bell because I got accepted without having to pay anything, for their most expensive phone on a pretty expensive plan.

This just goes to show that Virgin is much more lenient than the big 3, and having to put a deposit for a phone with them means you should probably check what's up with your credit score!
