I live in Manitoba and have been unable to find the Galaxy S2 anywhere. It's also the only province in which you aren't able to order it online. Is it not coming to Manitoba at all for some contractual reason or are we just the last province to get a shipment?

Well, Bell isn't available in Manitoba and the Virgin Mobile site says that it's not available in Manitoba due to "network differences". I think Virgin uses the MTS network in Manitoba which is CDMA so maybe that's why? Not sure.

I believe you can order the phone online from TheSource.ca with no activation. Just need to unlock it once you get it.

Just FYI, I called Wireless Etc. (Costco) to ask if they sold the Galaxy S2 and they said no, and Rogers probably won't get it ever. But they mentioned that Rogers will be getting some other kind of Galaxy branded phone in the next month or so. Not sure what it could be.

Also, I saw some posts mentioning a version of the Galaxy S2 with NFC that had been sent to the FCC for approval. The rumor is that AT&T in the US might be getting that version. If they do, then there's a chance that Rogers may carry it too at some point. Though perhaps not until many months afterwards.

That's right Virgin/Bell has no agreement with MTS/Rogers to use there UMTS/HSPA network yet users from other parts of Canada that come to Manitoba there phones work fine on UMTS/HSPA but one friend that's from Saskatchewan his phone will not work here so not sure if Sasktel might have no roam agreement as well.

I have an stock sim-free UK S2 and am on MTS.

I suspect that the network differences excuse may be close to the truth.

It works fine while I'm in Canada, but when I leave, it won't function for texting properly. It can receive texts, but can't send them.
The phone though, will work as a phone.
I'm not brave enough to spend $8 a meg on data while roaming.

I'm rooted and am now playing with other ROMs. So far the one I have isn't working while roaming for phone or texting so I'll have to keep working on it.

It was suggested to me that the APN settings could the problem but I have been unable to fully prove this out. There are 2 sets of APNs with MTS and the Galaxy S's and S2 I've had won't allow/recognize 2 APNs to be setup. I have now downloaded an APN manager and was able to setup both APNs. In doing so though, by default it recognized that Rogers was a valid APN (highlighted green) but the MTS entries I put in, it didn't automatically recognize. Perhaps the way Rogers and MTS are sharing this network or how it plays with an Android phone may be the problem.

At one point I had a ROM on my Galaxy S that showed the network was "ROGERS (incl. MTS)" which could suggest that MTS is not the owner of the network which would make sense.

Not sure if that helps, but I can tell you that it does work (sort of)
