Hello all, long time reader, first time poster.

I am pretty sure I am going to purchase HTC Dream through rogers, I was just wondering what people's thoughts on contract or no contract were ?

I have always been with fido and I when I got my first phone, I just bought it, and have done that ever since so I have always been monthly with them and haven't been locked into a contract.

With the Dream, do you think it is worth it to buy one outright ? Are their any advantages to it ?

With the three year contracts, what happens of the Dream dies during that period ? Also typically what are your options for upgrading or changing phones ? For example if in a 1.5 years a new android phone (or something else) become available through Rogers is it possible to switch phones ?

I have heard with the iPhone that if you lose it or it gets stolen, you are pretty screwed (some people I know have been forced to buy one full price, some have lucked out and have got refurbished ones, others have had to just get another cheaper smartphone) has anyone looked at the contract for the dream to see what happens with that situation would it be pretty much the same ?

Sorry about all of the questions, just haven't had a cell phone contract with rogers before.

Thanks.

it all depends on your money situation and if you can afford different contract. It is always better to get shorter plans as there are so many new phones coming out every year, and always getting better.

As for if the Dream dies, you can get an extended warranty to protect yourself

In the end I went with a contract, but the extended warranty for complete protection for 2 years, including screen damage and water damage (excluding submersion) is $250, I thought that was a bit too steep, particularly for an older phone that you can buy online for $400-500 outright.

I'd always recommend the contract.

Worst case scenario: You pay for cancellations, which would have been similar cost to your phone.

Best case scenario: You save hundreds off your phone, and likely would have gotten a better monthly rate as well.
