View Full Version : TELUS to soft-launch GSM network in Fall 2009?

"Over the past few weeks, we’ve spoken to quite a few people in the know who have casually mentioned that TELUS is soon going to be flipping the switch on its HSDPA network in a few major Canadian markets. The focus of the soft-launch will apparently be on the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. This information is further corroborated by a tip we received recently from a TELUS engineer who claims that September 2nd is the date that TELUS is eyeing for the soft-launch. The move will not only allow the company to iron out the kinks before a nationwide release, but it will also ensure that it has ample time to get everything thoroughly tested for February 12th, 2010 when all of the world comes to Vancouver and Whistler for the 2010 Winter Olympics (oh hi, GSM roaming fees). What makes this even more interesting is the fact that the same people also mentioned a Fall launch for Bell, the official cellular carrier of the 2010 Winter Olympics and a company that happens to have a Canada-wide tower sharing agreement with TELUS. Who’s excited to see Rogers’ GSM monoply come crashing down?"

It is news though. TELUS never said anything about Fall. It was always suppose to be Feb.

Either way. Pretty sweet. I'm hoping for the Nokia N97 for Christmas....lol

With this new network coming on both Bell/TELUS should we hold off getting a new phone until it officially launches, or will it make a difference at all.

For example, I'm getting the Pre when it comes out, but if I need to hold out for a few more moths for better/faster technology I will... thoughts?

Kronk86
05-19-2009, 06:21 AM
If you are set on the Pre, then don't wait. The HSPA version has no official launch, and will most likely end up at Rogers first, regardless of whether TELUS or Bell have launched their new network.

If you are waiting for a better phone, then yes. Wait!

The network is HSPA (UMTS not GSM) and due to the famous near-sightedness of wireless carriers, Telus and Bell have opted for the 1900 band... you know, the one no one else in the world uses meaning most phones won't be able to roam on their network. I mean come on... who would want people on their network? right?

You mean the one that every carrier in North America except T-Mobile uses????

They will all roam on their EDGE networks...not to worry!

I guess I had not though of US tourists (don't know why, just slipped my mind). Don't mind me, I am just frustrated because it seems that the touch pro2 will be dual band UMTS and so it won't work on the 1900 :(

You would be correct. The 'world' phones TELUS has will not work on their new HSPA network.

So if people just upgraded, or plan on upgrading, i would have suggested waiting.

As for the soft launch. It looks to be delayed a few weeks.

I was at the movies in Toronto on the weekend and Telus ran an interesting commercial before the movie. It was a new one with rabbits in it, but it didn't mention anything really about what it was about aside from teasing about a big announcement on September 15. The only big announcement I could see worthy of this kind of teasing commercial would be the announcement of the launch of the new network.

TELUS has a broadband based TELUS TV in the west, but they ARE re-selling Bell Satalite TV Nationwide.

Slightly different interface, but otherwise the same.

I think they will launch at about the same time. If you are in the Lower Mainland BC, the HSPA network is up and running already. You can select it, but not connect.

October, early November seems like a good prediction. The staff haven't yet been trained to deal with HSPA and the new features it brings.

I don't see it rolling out in September just based on that alone.
