Seriously in Canada the problem is you either have a great phone selection and crappy plans or decent plans with crappy phones. I am really hoping that the new guys come in with the "perfect balance" of plans and phones!

Agreed.. rates like the USA would be a big plus.

I actually like the name and the logo. It's catchy... hope they stand by the $40 rates they propose.

I would only consider switching after a few months or a year of them all being in business. Just to see how stable they all will be

It interests me to see what will happen with Public Mobile.

I wish them success, especially in ON. That is going to be a tough market to crack.

I hope they land a large distributor, but their business plan doesn't sound as complete as it should.

It looks like it might end up like Amp'd Mobile.

Let's cross our fingers and hope not.

40$/month unlimited talk and text.... not too bad but still not as good as what metro pcs offers in the states. 35$/month unlimited nationwide talk text and web. Public mobile should have followed that plan. I would have gone with them right away.

CRTC reviews ownership structure of new cellphone hopeful Public Mobile

OTTAWA — After being slapped down by the federal government over the Globalive issue, the CRTC says it is reviewing the Canadian ownership bona fides of a second new entrant to the country's cellphone market.

The federal regulator says it will hold an internal review of Toronto-based Public Mobile to see if its complex ownership structure is Canadian enough.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission said the issues involving the new regional entrant are similar to new national carrier Globalive.

The CRTC said it was cognizant of the fact that Ottawa overruled its rejection of Globalive, but did not consider Globalive a precedent since the government "stated that the decision to vary is specific to the facts of this case."

It said Public Mobile's ownership "appears to comply" with the Telecom Act, but added "control in fact" involves equity from a number of foreign investors.

"The commission considers that the ownership structure of Public Mobile is of a complex nature and could hold precedential value for the industry and the general public," the CRTC said.

Public Mobile chief executive Alek Krstajic said the company has a large percentage of Canadian shareholders and a governance structure controlled by Canadians.

"We expect that the CRTC will very quickly come to a determination that we are Canadian controlled in fact and in law," he said in an email to The Canadian Press.

Last spring, Public Mobile paid $52 million to operate in the relatively uncontested G-band of the spectrum, where it has few rivals. It hopes to offer services primarily in Ontario.

Following the federal spectrum auction, the CRTC advised Globalive, Public Mobile and a third new payer, DAVE Wireless, that it was looking at their ownership structures.

Under the Telecom Act, cellphone operators must be Canadian owned and controlled, although the rules do not preclude firms from obtaining a majority of their finances from outside sources.

The CRTC expects to announce a decision on Public Mobile early in the new year. It has yet to say how it will conduct its review of DAVE.
