View Full Version : Do Not Buy HTC in Canada

I am warning all Canadians to NOT buy any HTC products in Canada (or elsewhere, really). Why? Read on.

On December 11th I purchased my Nexus One in Vancouver. Bright, shiny, and new; I loved and cared for this phone. On April 29th, less than 5 months later, the power button broke. I was unable to make calls out, only receive incoming calls. The only way to get access to the phone was to call in to it, or to plug it in. Not good.

I began my Odyssey with HTC "Customer Support" on that day. After being bounced around and given 1-800 numbers that led to answering machines where no one ever called you back, I finally got someone at HTC and they issued me a ticket number, said my case had been 'escalated', and that I would be contacted within 24-72 hours. The first time I was told this was on May 3rd. It is now May 19th and I have been re-told that same story countless times. And it is a lie. No one calls me back, nothing gets delivered to my house.

As if this isn't bad enough, spending $500 on a piece of electronic HTC Junk, I was told that I wouldn't receive a loaner phone while mine was being repaired, that this was ONLY for those who purchased their phones in the USA. Also, more importantly (and this is important regardless of where you live), they WOULD NEVER GIVE ME A REPLACEMENT PHONE, only fix the one I had. They had also conveniently pre-dated my warranty for 2 months prior to my actual purchase of the phone. Shady? Yes.

Long story stort, AVOID HTC PHONES!! Motorola phones have been great and I'm sorry I didn't buy a Motorola again this time. That was a $500 error! HTC's Customer Service bites big time, they will tell you the same b.s. story while THREE WEEKS LATER, I still have a broken phone. And if you need your phone for on-call as I do, then mailing it away for 10 business days is not a great option.

Conclusion: Don't buy HTC! If you have, do a return to point-of-sale if possible, do a chargeback on your credit card otherwise. THEY HAVE NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. THEY LIE and really, no one you talk to gives a flying f***.

That sucks. I've heard similar stories about the Nexus One's power button and the subsequent poor customer service. At the same time though, I've been using nothing but HTC devices so far and have been quite happy. I might have something different to say if I ever needed customer support though...

Why would you spend $500 on a two year old phone when you can get a vastly superior HTC, or any other brand, for just as much by now? Or pay virtually nothing on a contract?

How exactly did you buy this phone that it doesn't have a warranty? Did you buy it from an ebay or discount seller in the US? Your right, it does sound shady - your story that is. It sounds like you bought this online from a foreign distributor without thoroughly thinking your purchase through.

When you do this you voluntarily throw away support and your warranty. You agreed to pay top dollar for an outdated device and assume all risk of the purchase. Then you broke it and it is all HTC's fault? And you're starting forum accounts all over the internet to make a single spam post to diss them? No sir, you picked up the dice and rolled them of your own free will, you can't remove your wager from the table now that you don't like the outcome.

Buy your HTC legitimately through a carrier and it is quite simply the best built device on the market right now. Their quality control is unmatched in the market right now, and unlike samsung, moto, or apple their devices arrive in store with the most finished product in my opinion. I did actually have a friend with Desire problems, but he didn't buy his device through shady channels so his service experience was fantastic. Here endeth the lesson.

well, first off.....isn't the Nexus a google phone, branded by Samsung? No mention of HTC there....

Secondly, hardware issues happen BUT admittedly you are someone who did not do their research. This phone is NOT worth $500 in the retail market, and wasn't at the time. If you were a smart consumer, and were considering dropping $500 on a phone at the time, I would think you would do a little more research.

The internet has space for you, lonely whiner. Feel free to keep posting your crap HOWEVER, realize that no one gives 2 shats about your issues when you play stupid in the first place. Any phone still under warranty (hence release date research), and if not mfr then under the providers 1 year mfr warranty that they have to honor, should be handled by the retailer who sold you the phone. Stop trying to be all "LOOK MOMMY I CAN DO IT MYSELF" and let the retailer take the brunt. They tend to make things happen much faster than doing it yourself. Remember, you were the one who bought an old phone without researching it or knowing the age of it, so let the retailer take care of it. Within 1 year, any retailer will send the phone off for RMA.

You don't get a free loaner phone, deal with it.

1. Agree with flagg. Why on earth did you pay $500 for a Nexus One? Maybe when it was brand new, but Dec 2010? Really?

2. @0defaced, Nexus One is made by HTC. Nexus S is made by Samsung.

3. I bought a Incredible S, and I can't think of another phone on the market right now that will make me happier.

just because you had a bad experiance with an htc phone doesnt make all of their phones crap. i have been using htc phones for a while now, from desire, desire hd and a surround 7 and i have loved every single one of them. and like the other ppl have been saying should have bought it legit and you wouldnt have a problem, i highly doubt if you bought it right from google that they would have "altered" your warranty especially if you have a legit proof of purchase. know your facts before buying a phone

HTC Canada will only get in touch with you, if you post something really nasty.
I have experience with HTC - believe me!

Since I posted the above info., some folks completely did not understand a thing
about what I said in the post!

Win a few, lose a few.

N.B. I had to use google for all my answers.

Currently updated to Mango build 7720 thirty minutes ago.

HTC is like any company, but if you act childish and throw a tantrum....nobody listens....

On another note, seeing as the poster hasn't shown his whiney mug around the forums, can we chalk this up to an angry-rogers-rep-still-not-getting-HTC-products spam post?

or something like that..... :p

I just wanted to add that I've owned 3 HTC phones and Rooted all of them and installed custom roms on them and they have all work perfect. I love HTC and I dont think I'll ever buy another brand of phone

your one bad experience doesn't speak for HTC in general though. I am (so far) a very happy HTC customer. I don't think I'll ever buy a phone without 'htc' embodied on it.

I bought 2 Nexus One's just a little over a year ago for $530.00 each.
I never had an issues with any of them, until about 6 months into having them and my wife dropped hers and broke her screen.

I looked into trying to replace the screen myself and found it would be a big job so I called HTC and asked them how much it would cost.
They said for $55.00 they would they allow me to ship it to them for an estimate (averaging about $135.00 depending on the damage)

I figured for under $200.00 I could not go wrong.
So I took the back off and Battery out, removed the sim card and packed it in a box.
I glued on the Fedex label they sent in my email and shipped it back.

It went over night from Vancouver Island to Toronto and then from there to Texas.

After about 1 week I called them and they said they just received it and they would to me know what the damage was going to cost.

I got antsy and called them the next day, they said check your email.
I looked in my email and found a shipping tracking notification.

3 days later I got my wife's phone back, it was a new or refurbished phone.
And it only cost me $55.00. No extra Charges and I'm sure that didn't even cover their shipping costs both ways.

Everyone I talked to during this whole experience was fantastic.

HTC IS AWESOME, I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS.

IN the past 3 years I have bought 12 phones for my wife and I.
2x HTC magic's
2x Nexus One's
2x HTC Desire HD's
1x HTC Sensation (locked to Bell) no unlock codes yet
And as soon as they update their unlock code server, I'll buy on for the wife.

So Over all....
HTC makes good Quality product, with great weighty feel and no cheap plastic like ** Samsung **.

Keep Up the Great work HTC and Get me the unlock codes for my
Bell HTC SENSATION......

THanks Winston.....................

That's sounds exactly what happened with my LG Chocolate, it's rare that you'll ever get a phone replaced I never did when 3 of my other phones broke, you usually either have to get it fixed (usually pricey) or get a new phone.

I wouldn't judge HTC for your mistake, but I must say.. I was kind of disappointed with their delays for most of their firmware updates, I waited 5 months for a firmware update one time.

But hey, this happens a lot in the tech world. You usually get disappointed by slow service and end up giving up right when they finally give you what you want. It sucks a lot, my one friend waited 3 delayed months for his Alienware laptop that he paid thousands for one time.

I have had an HTC Touch, Desire and now the Amaze. I have had no problems with them at all. That sucks that you had a bad experience, but really, I cannot say anything bad about HTC.

I owned an HTC Windows 7 HD phone, and it was damaged by water.
HTC told me to contact Bell - and Bell told me to contact HTC....and so on 'til infinity.
Paid for a replacement phone (same model) and got rid of the three year Bell contract.
When the phone was new, then it was 100% rock solid....so come to your own conclusions about HTC devices....nuff sed.

Water damage, Bell won't do ****. It's out of warranty. HTC could technically repair it, but it would cost you an arm and a leg, water damage usually means refurbishment.

Sucks you got turned around like that, I recently picked up a HTC EVO 3D off of Rogers and it is one of the best phones I've ever used. Don't feel plasticy like Samsung and LG.

You are right, draw your own conclusions about HTC phones. They are one of the many Android manufacturers in Canada, so If you don't like them pick another.

HTC is bring out new Android 4.n.n phones within a very few months. Telus may offer you a choice of new Android 'phones.
Like MS's Windows, Apple's OS, UNIX and Linux, there are so many choices for all owners.
Don't knock a vendor because of one bad phone....I prefer Windows 7.5 'phones!
