Not surprised. Bell and Telus have been testing and slowly deploying their HSPA equipment and have been testing it in Mississauga for awhile now. Should be launched nationally by early 2010.

Wonder if they will have pre launch of the network to certain areas, not testing but actually providing it to customers. We all have to wait i guess to see what will happen with the network.

Not to be a downer or anything but we are talking about bell. There is nothing stopping them to use a filter to filter out any foreign IMEIs thus, unlocked phones would be useless.

Thats actually true they would filter it out, i would expect that to make some money on people buying their devices. They didn't go to all the trouble in upgrading their network so that people can get phones from other places and drop them on their line. Also seems lately they been giving hints of some nice devices coming their way.

Yea...it is going to be sweet.
Rogers, TELUS and Bell all plan on filtering out foreign IMEI's. Rogers said early next year it will start.
Why can't canada be like the US?! Even CDMA carrier's would allow you to use another providers Handset.

I've been thinking really hard lately on how we as consumers can get the carriers to change their ways and be more like their US counterparts (or, *gasp* more like the European carriers) and bring the prices down and make the plans more reasonable. So far, short of people just stop paying the high prices and move to very basic plans or do something else so that they start loosing money I've come up with nothing. As long as we are willing to pay what they are offering they will keep charging.
Anyone have any other ideas?
oh and not to mention vendor lock-in with their handsets that make it expensive to switch carriers or having to sign half your life to a contract.

until we can get some competition that will relate to US carriers than and only than can we get some lower prices. hopefully in the near future maybe with globalive will have cheaper data and voice with 2 yr contracts and not 3yr.

I think the only thing GL will have going for (from what I've heard) is the ow rate and no contract. Phones will probably be duds though
