Hey,
I was just wondering what you guys think of GL ? Will it be our saviour and will we see the end of high price wireless in Canada?
Personally, I was a bit disappointing when I learned that GL will be coming out with two brands. It seems that perhaps the cheaper brand might just have the same prices ala Fido/Koodoo/Solo and that mainstream GL might have the prices as the Big 3. GL has the potential to mix things up but the economy bad I wonder how much of a profit loss GL is willing to take to give Canadians an alternative and hopeful cheaper option.
Also, am I the only one who is sick of paying LD? I mean I call someone who is thirty minutes away from but its long distance and priced the same as someone who say lives maybe on the other side of Canada? I think LD hurts Canadians and we don't feel truly connected with one another. I'll be ok with a $7 SAF as long as CID/VM/text/LD prices drop substantially.
Have a great night,

i'm realy hoping that GL will be the beggining of better rates in canada. I'm currently with telus and only have 1 month left on contract. I'll be switching over to the koodo brand since it seems to be the best deal out there now. Nice thing is that when gl launches i can always ditch koodo worry free if gl is better. ahh the freedom of non contract!! cant wait!

fingers crossed, i'd love lower data plan prices; I'm dying to get an iPhone or blackberry but the data plans are just too much with Rogers.

you're probably right about the same price
as koodo, solo, etc. im pretty sure GL is not going to affect
the pricing of the other providers, but just another option
to look at. Big changes would only happen
if large companies like Verizon or T.Mobile from the states
come into action. Then there would be a large amount of competition.

Agree with midnight_toker would love to see better DATA PLANS in this country. I am currently have one device on Rogers Wireless but data plans are terrible as all must know. Hopefully GL can toss us and unlimited or even something to even compete with what the states have. OR maybe just maybe toss up Wifi towers ( like t-mobile) that would nice as well.

I am not too sure if GL will be that much of an impact on the scene. Really the iPhone is what really got Rogers to lower their data plans...but hey the more players hopefully the better rates=win for the consumer!

I think the only impact GL will have is more options for us consumers. From what I hear they are going after people who want no contact and a fixed monthly price.
Wonder what phones they will come out with... I'm guessing some sort of low end Samsung or Nokia

As cool as it would be for a new company to undercut the Big 3 with lower prices and better phones, that's just not the way it's gonna happen. Even with all their available resources, it will to take a while for Globalive to get rolling and become a viable, nationwide player. In the meantime, they will have to be able to make enough profits in their launch markets to not only sustain the company but to drive growth... so, I wouldn't hold my breath for drastically cheaper phones or plans. I would give them 5 years, at the most, to prove themselves. If they haven't built up a nationwide network and customer base by then, they probably won't make it. We'll have to wait until 2015 or so to see how things pan out.

Well when it comes to data plans i think Rogers is definitely over prices. TELUS and Bell give you unlimited data for $30. How many gigs can you now get at Rogers after the iPhone promo ended?!
I agree with the LD rate issue though. I work for TELUS, and i think it is ridiculous that one person can make a LD call from one place, but the person they called can't call back because its LD for them?! Non-Reciprocating Cell Sites i believe is the correct term. It needs to change.
Globe Alive looked promising at first. They are only launching in ON and QC the first year though. They are going to have a hard time getting into the west after that. The big 3 are going to do everything in their power to keep them out.
Oh, and an FYI....Koodo is owned by TELUS and TELUS will match any plan from them if you were thinking about switching. Keep your tenure with TELUS and get them to give you some free features!!!!

After analyzing the data usage statistics... Rogers/Fido data plans are actually fairly competitive. If I remember the numbers correctly:
- 91 or 92% of users did not exceed 200mb/month usage.
- 95% of users did not exceed 500mb/month usage.
I for one, have BARELY ever exceeded 1GB with extremely heavy usage on my iPhone (internet radio every day, tethering infrequently).
Rogers Current Data Plans:
$25: 500MB
$30: 1GB
$60: 3GB
So, why pay $30 for unlimited when the majority of people aren't actually going to use it? Oh wait... because seeing the word unlimited is psychologically pleasing! Ahh right I forgot! ;)
Also, if I remember correctly, Belus unlimited data plans do not allow tethering... Rogers data plans actually do allow for tethering.
Don't even get me started on Blackberry's... 1GB is practically unlimited on them due to data compression.
EDIT: Forgot to mention something. Globalive will be launching in all major markets (Toronto, Vancouver, etc.) with the exception of Quebec. All new spectrum purchased in the province of Quebec was bought by Quebecor.

Globe's target market are the lower end of the market, they have a few hurdles to overcome especially the foreign ownership % and because of the current economy it might take sometime for them to even break groung.

That is what I thought. Aren't they going after the prepaid gang with no contract etc?
So basically another budget carrier to go with Solo, Koodoo, Virgin, PC Mobile and FIDO?

i see your point but its just not going to happen. No one is willing to risk it on a new carrier in these times.

I think if anything GL will get rid of the 3-year contract and atleast add Free VM/CID in the plans or text. As for SAF who knows maybe get rid of it. Hopefully LD is gone its insane, its free in the States so obviously CDNs should be able to have it as well.
