HP/Palm creates “Super Device Countdown” app in anticipation of February 9th event

HP/Palm will be holding their “Think Big. Think Small. Think Beyond” event on February 9th. Some details have already leaked such as a couple upcoming tablets (Rogers and Bell will be releasing the “Opal” in September). In the meantime a free app called “Super Device Countdown” has been created to pass the time. It’s basic and counts down the time until the event with HP logos floating around. Interesting name to call the app though. Wonder what the Super Devices will be…

The Palm Pre 2 launched today on Rogers and let’s give one away! The full prize pack comes with a Palm Pre 2, Touchstone, Leather case and a $25 card to spend in the App Catalog. Rogers Palm Pre 2 images surface

Last week HP officially announced that the Palm Pre 2 was coming to Canada “in the coming months”, but gave no insight into which carrier was going to carry the device. Then hidden in the source code on the Palm Canada site was “The Palm Pre2 phone is available on the Rodger’s network”. We can now confirm that this new webOS 2.0 device will in fact be coming to Rogers as one of our tipsters sent us the upcoming packaging with Rogers all over it. In addition, taking a look at the pics you’ll see the Pre 2 all hooked up to Rogers network. We’re still waiting on an official launch date and pricing. Check out the pics after the break…

Update: Rumoured pricing/launch date – not confirmed – could be the following: November 9th launch date with the 3-year voice/data contract being $99.99. Again, not confirmed.

Update #2: We’ve been asked to take the images down. Just know it’s coming soon… who’s excited to be getting the new Palm device?

Palm Pre 2 will be “available on the Rodger’s network”

With HP officially announcing the new Palm Pre 2 yesterday they stated that it will be available in Canada “in the coming months”. Other carriers were announced such as Verizon in the United States and even SFR in France will be the first to launch this on Friday. No Canadian carrier was listed. However, if you take a look into the source code on the Canadian section of the Palm Pre 2 it reveals that “The Palm Pre2 phone is available on the Rodger’s network”. Even though it’s spelled incorrectly it’s a good indication that Rogers Wireless will be taking a crack at the newest version of the Palm Pre.

HP says new webOS phones “coming early next year”

When HP rescued Palm and purchased them for $1.2 billion they got the rights for their new webOS platform. HP announced today that they will be releasing new smartphones in early 2011 that will be powered by webOS. Senior Vice President Eric Cador was at a conference in Barcelona and stated “You will see us coming early next year with new phones”. No other details were given on if these new phones will be branded HP or Palm – hopefully not the iPAQ series and Palm lives on. Maybe Cador is talking about those mysterious HP devices that CTO Phil McKinney was playing with a few weeks ago.

webOS 2.0 coming “later this year”

Us Canadians who have the Palm Pre recently got a new upgrade to webOS 1.4.5… good news today as head of HP’s Palm division (formally Palm CEO) Jon Rubinstein said at Fortune Brainstorm Tech that webOS 2.0 is expected to come out “later this year”. No exact details were given on what it will look like or when it will actually be pushed out

Palm is expected to release new devices too. Remember a few weeks ago at a Palm developer conference where Palm reps said “I’m not allowed to talk about future roadmaps, especially because we’re in the process of being acquired by HP, so I can’t say. But yes we have a road map. We are working on future devices. And [a] new version of the OS. So I think, you’re going to find the next year very exciting.”

With webOS coming out, plus new devices it might shape up to be a good end of year show for HP/Palm. But on a bit of a downer note. HP CEO Mark Hurd was quoted today by German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine saying that the Palm brand might “move into the background” similar to the “HP Pavillion for personal computers” – a sub-brand”.

webOS 1.4.5 now available for download on the Bell Palm Pre

An update for all the Bell Palm Pre users in Canada… webOS 1.4.5 is now available and Palm states in the release notes that the changes are as follows:
Feature changes to existing applications
System
- This release includes minor fixes and enhancements to support the public release of the webOS Plug-in Development Kit (PDK).
- This release may require you to update certain apps to their latest version to properly support the launch of the webOS PDK. If you have a game that is not saving your game information correctly (high scores, stages, settings) check the App Catalog for updates. For more information on updating apps, see Using App Catalog

Web
- If a user enters text in a field on certain websites, the screen focus now remains on the text being entered.
- This release fixes a rare problem so that podcasts now download correctly.

Security
This release addresses several security issues with the Palm webOS software.

Palm: “next year very exciting” with new devices

The Palm Pre is the only device that has graced our great land and it’s available for about $300 no-contract. Pretty good deal for a device that has the new webOS platform. We’re hearing mixed rumours of this selling well vs. not selling well in Canada, no exact numbers are released.

However, if you’re a Palm fan there’s some good news on the horizon. A developers webinar was hosted by AT&T yesterday and a rep was asked about new devices:

HP buys Palm for $1.2 billion

After a few weeks of rumours a press release went out that officially stated that “HP and Palm, Inc. today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which HP will purchase Palm, a provider of smartphones powered by the Palm webOS mobile operating system, at a price of $5.70 per share of Palm common stock in cash or an enterprise value of approximately $1.2 billion.”

Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein is “expected to remain with the company” said “We’re thrilled by HP’s vote of confidence in Palm’s technological leadership, which delivered Palm webOS and iconic products such as the Palm Pre. HP’s longstanding culture of innovation, scale and global operating resources make it the perfect partner to rapidly accelerate the growth of webOS”.

On Palm’s company blog they wrote that “In case you didn’t hear, we just announced a merger with a little shop down the street called HP. That little shop happens to be the world’s largest technology company, and certainly one of the most revered companies in all of tech-land. Can you say “webOS acceleration”?”

From the supporting documents it says that HP was interested in the webOS platform because it will “enable unique, integrated, connected experiences across connected mobile devices”. In addition, the reason for purchasing Palm is for the following reasons:
- Strategic and financially attractive opportunity
– Compelling combination
– World-class technology in connected mobile devices

“Palm is essentially an accelerating death spiral”… analysts target shares to hit $0.00

Interesting article on the future of Palm from CNN Money. “Shares of Palm plunged 19% to $4.59 a share early Friday, a new 52-week low. Investors are becoming increasingly pessimistic about the company’s future and several analysts downgraded their positions on the stock to “sell.” Two analysts even lowered their price targets to $0… Morgan Joseph & Co. analyst Ilya Grozovsky, one of the two analysts to cut its price target on Palm shares to $0, said “Palm is essentially an accelerating death spiral.”

The other analyst is Peter Misek from Canaccord Adams who said that Palm only has enough money to last them 12 more months. Misek stated “Palm’s troubles will only accelerate as carriers and suppliers increasingly question the company’s solvency and withdraw their support.”
