WIND Mobile now has “well over 430,000 active customers,” celebrates by giving new activations a free add-on

Yesterday WIND Mobile Q1 2012 results were reported and at the of March their subscriber base reached 415,364. Today, in a press release promoting a new offer revealed the last 6 weeks WIND has managed tally up a few new subs to “well over 430,000 active customers.” No word on their ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) but it should still be somewhere around $27.30/month.

The press release promoted a new offer, specifically targeting “higher value postpaid segments,” will give new activations on the $40/month Unlimited talk/text/data plan a free add-on – either Voicemail plus or World Saver (usually $8/month). WIND stated the postpaid now accounts for over 40% of their customer base. The promo officially starts tomorrow until June 4th.

WIND Mobile subscriber Q1 subscriber numbers have been released and the numbers have increased. WIND has now racked up a total of 415,364 customers, up a whopping 52.9% from last year, and up 12,364 in the quarter. Good news for us consumers as the ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) has slightly dropped $0.10 (0.5%) to $27.30/month. Not the hugest news, but the report also indicated that WIND currently has 481 total points of sale including 215 branded locations.

When the government announced the rules for the upcoming 700MHz spectrum auction WIND CEO proclaimed that he would potentially boycott the event. However, one of highlights noted in release stated that “WIND Mobile is assessing the 700 MHz spectrum auction rules and although clearly advantageous to wireless incumbents, there is a prime 2X5 MHz band available in certain regions that could be beneficial to WIND Mobile’s long term strategy.” The “assessing” will most likely turn into participating. The auction is expected to start first half 2013.

WIND Mobile releases the Samsung Galaxy Q

There’s not much really to say about the Samsung Galaxy Q. It was rumoured to be launching at WIND Mobile, and it’s now available to the masses. This uber entry-level Android runs OS 2.3 Gingerbread, has a 3.2-inch display and has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. WIND has this priced at $199 outright, or the Galaxy Q can be had for $0 on WINDtab on both the $25 and $40 monthly plan.

Huawei U8651 released by WIND for $149

WIND has finally released the Huawei U8651, otherwise known as the Astro. This Android 2.3 device could possibly be one of the lowest price Android devices on the market at $149 outright (or $0 on the WINDtab with either the $25 or $40 plan). Public Mobile has Wind beat with their $100 Android devices, regardless, it’s affordable and entry-level. The U8651 comes with a 3.5-inch display (resolution of 320 x 480), 3.2 MP camera, microSD card slot that can hold up to 32GB, Wi-Fi and weighs 118 grams. In addition, the U8651 comes with a few extra back covers (red and white) so you can style it up.

WIND to release the Nokia Lumia 710 on May 3rd, $259 outright

The famous “coming soon” label is is going to vanish on WIND Mobile’s upcoming Nokia Lumia 710. Emails have gone out to those who “pre-registered” for this Windows Phone 7 Mango device informing them that this will officially launch on May 3rd. Curious about the price points? Well, here they are: $259 outright, $99 on the WINDtab with the WIND25 monthly plan, and $0 on the WINDtab with WIND40 monthly plan.

WIND actively testing network in Windsor

WIND must be getting close to blowing the doors open on launching their service in Windsor, Ontario. We reported last week that a Windsor store located in Devonshire Mall showed up on the store locator in their mobile site. We’re now getting tips that users are getting an active network indicating a Wind Home Zone signal in the area, along with other carriers such as Rogers, Bell, TELUS, T-Mobile, and AT&T. The general span that this screenshot was captured was in the Walkerville area, so it’s expected that we’ll see the downtown core covered with a WIND Home one area.

We’re still hearing the network will go live sometime in May.

WIND Mobile wins Supreme Court foreign ownership battle against Public Mobile

Even before WIND Mobile launched their Canadian wireless service other competing carriers were raising questions about the amount of foreign ownership they had, mostly funded by Egypt’s Orascom Telecom. A couple years of court hearings led to the Federal Court of Appeal to declare that Globalive, WIND Mobile’s parent-company, was “Canadian owned and controlled company.”

However, this news was not welcomed by one of their competitors, Public Mobile. Alek Krstajic, Public’s CEO, appealed the decision and stated they wanted further inquiry into WIND’s foreign ownership structure and took it to the Supreme Court of Canada. Krstajic boldly stated that all carriers, specifically Public, wanted “a level-playing field.”

Today the Supreme Court of Canada dropped the hammer and ruled against Public Mobile by stating WIND Mobile is in complete compliance with the ownership rules in the Telecom Act, thus not granting them a leave of appeal. In a post on their company blog, Tony Lacavera, CEO and Chairman of WIND Mobile, said “WIND is interested in fighting in the marketplace to provide Canadians with fair, transparent and competitive wireless offerings, not in fighting in courtrooms. We’re extremely pleased with the Supreme Court’s decision, which will allow us to tie off this loose end and continue working with the best interests of Canadians firmly in mind.”

WIND also took the time to announce they have “over 400,000 happy customers” and 490 points of distribution.

We’ve reached out to Public Mobile on the outcome, Bob Boron, General Counsel for Public Mobile, said that “Although we are disappointed that the Supreme Court has chosen not to hear Public Mobile’s appeal, we nonetheless believe that by bringing this case forward, Public Mobile has put a spotlight on the issue of foreign ownership and control of wireless carriers in Canada… Although it is unfortunate that the SCC has chosen not to resolve the confusion over Cabinet’s authority in varying the decisions of administrative bodies, Public Mobile has been successful on the issue that really matters, the creation of a level playing field for all new wireless entrants.”

So, case closed. Now Wind and the others can focus on the upcoming 700Mhz spectrum auction.

WIND Mobile to open Windsor store in Devonshire Mall

WIND Mobile seems to be getting real close to launching service in Windsor. The company has been on a hiring spree and although their coverage map has not been updated, it’s expected that WIND customers will have a Home Zone in the heart of the city. There’s one certainty – WIND will have a store located in Devonshire Mall (3100 Howard Avenue). This location has popped up on their list of store locations, but one can only view it on their mobile site. It’s progress… hopefully an announcement will be coming in the next few more days. Most likely something in May.

WIND Mobile opens up pre-registration for the Lumia 710

WIND Mobile posted a small image of the Nokia Lumia 710 with the words “coming soon” on their site a couple nights ago. No details of when we could expect it to be available, however, today they’ve taken a small step forward and opened up the option for customers to “pre-register”. There’s still no firm details as when this Windows Phone 7 Mango device is landing as they’re only asking for your contact info, but promising you’ll be the first to know of any updates.

WIND officially says the Nokia Lumia 710 is “Coming Soon”

A few weeks ago we let you know that WIND Mobile was going to be releasing a few new devices: Nokia Lumia 710, Samsung Gravity Touch 2, and Huawei Astro. These are all expected to be available sometime over the next few weeks and if you take a gander at the WIND Mobile site today you’ll see one of them, the Window Phone Mango Lumia 710, with the familiar “Coming Soon” label on it. Unfortunately that’s all the information currently available. No word on price, but Rogers is selling the Lumia 710 for a ridiculously low $229.99 outright – so it’ll be interesting to see what WIND launches with.
