WIND adds 11,281 subscribers in Q1, APRU of $27.60/month

If the numbers are correct, then WIND Mobile added 11,281 subscribers in Q1. Parent-company Orascom Telecom released their Q1 2013 results today and noted that WIND Mobile Canada now has a total of 601,719 wireless subscribers (up 44.9% from 2012). In addition, APRU (Average Revenue Per User) hit $27.60, up 1.1% year-over-year. The slight increase in subs was reportedly from “its ‘Value Plus’ strategy,” plus the launch of several flagship devices, such as the Google Nexus 4 and the BlackBerry Z10.

WIND Mobile launches the Samsung Galaxy S4

Most Canadian carriers released the Samsung Galaxy S4 a couple weeks ago, but today it’s WIND Mobile that has started selling this flagship Android. The price, as previously stated, is $399 on the WINDTab or $699 outright. One of the selling points that WIND is focussing on is their all-in talk/text and data plan for $30/month. WIND launching the Galaxy S4 on May 14th, $699 outright

WIND Mobile will be adding the Samsung Galaxy S4 to their lineup next week. An email blast was sent out to interested customers informing them that the official launch date is Tuesday, May 14th. Looks like WIND has priced the GS4, in both black and white, at $699 outright and $399 on the WINDTab. In addition, the email noted that the new flagship Galaxy is “available for new and current customers on May 14th. Eligible WINDTab upgrades will be available starting June 14th.”

WIND Mobile having massive ‘lightly loved’ sale

If you’re into saving a few bucks and want a ‘lightly loved’ – also known as slightly used and refurbished – then WIND Mobile might be your next stop. The wireless carrier has organized a huge sale on devices that have been returned. For example, the Galaxy Nexus is $169, LG Optimus 4X HD is $199, Galaxy S III is $299, HTC Amaze is $229, and the Galaxy Note II is $349.

WIND notes that “Our Lightly Loved phones have been returned within 2 weeks of purchase, 30 minutes of talk or have been refurbished by the experts… All Lightly Loved devices are final sale and non-returnable to WIND. Offer only available while quantities/supplies last. Cannot be combined with WINDtab.”

Certainly something to think about.

Mobilicity and WIND Galaxy S4 launch delayed, customers informed it’ll be “just a bit longer”

While some Canadians who pre-ordered have been lucky to receive their Galaxy S4, most are patiently waiting for stock arrive in carriers stores. The Galaxy S4 will be on every Canadian carriers device lineup – Rogers, Bell, TELUS, Fido, Virgin, Koodo, WIND, Mobilicity, Videotron, SaskTel, Eastlink and MTS – and Samsung Canada stated last week that “Due to overwhelming global demand of Samsung GALAXY S4, the initial supply may be limited. We expect to fulfill inventory to meet demands in the coming weeks.”

Some carriers stated the device will be available on May 3rd, but we’re hearing availability will be in full form by May 10th. Earlier this week Mobilicity declared on Twitter that “shipments have been temporarily delayed and we expect it to arrive by early next week.” In addition, WIND Mobile customers have been notified that they will be waiting “just a bit longer.” In an email blast, WIND said that “due to unforeseen circumstances there has been a delay with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4″ and “our delivery of this iconic device was not processed in time to accommodate our original launch date. We’re hoping that Samsung can fulfill our order soon.”

The Galaxy S4 ranges in price from $199.99 on a 3-year to $700 outright.

WIND Mobile’s Chief Legal Officer departs for TELUS

Andrea Wood, WIND Mobile’s Chief Legal Officer, will be starting her new job at competing wireless carrier TELUS on Monday.

This news was confirmed by both WIND and TELUS. In an email, Pietro Cordova, WIND’s COO, said that “Everyone here at Wind would like to wish her the very best in her new role and thank her for the last four years.” TELUS stated that “Andrea brings more than 25 years of distinguished legal experience to Telus, much of that in the telecommunications and related industries. We expect great things from Andrea as she joins Telus as a senior member of our legal team.”

Wood was a key player in defending WIND Mobile over the years, but TELUS is eager to bring her on, especially in this time of new entrant transition. All the new wireless players – WIND Mobile, Mobilicity, Public Mobile – have been put up for sale, or looking for buyers. WIND Mobile now has over 600,000 wireless subscribers.

White BlackBerry Z10 now in stock at WIND

Last month WIND Mobile placed the white BlackBerry Z10 on their site as available, but quickly removed it as inventory reportedly sold out. Now, according to their website, WIND has made both the black and white versions available. The prices are still the same at $299 on WINDtab, or $599 outright. WIND to release the BlackBerry Q10, goes live with pre-registration page

The new BlackBerry Q10 is heading towards many Canadian carriers in the next few weeks (launch date is expected for April 30th). The latest to announce plans is WIND Mobile as they’ve put up a pre-registration page that informs eager physical QWERTY users that the device is ‘coming soon.’ No release date is listed, nor prices, but this BlackBerry 10 powered smartphone will most likely come in around the same cost as competing carriers at $700 outright.

WIND and Mobilicity confirm May 3rd availability for the Galaxy S4

The Big 3 carriers and their sub-brands all announced plans earlier this week to release the Samsung Galaxy S4 on May 3rd. For those who decided to pre-order you’re looking at scoring this 5-inch Jelly Bean a bit early on May 27th. In speaking with Samsung Canada they said that all carrier would have in-store availability on May 3rd. If you’re thinking about getting this “life’s companion” on either Mobilicity or WIND Mobile, both carriers have now confirmed this to be available on the 3rd. No prices yet have been announced – probably around the $650 to $700 outright mark.

T-Mobile in the United States began offering the iPhone 5 today. The price starts at $579.99 for the 16GB version and increases to $779.99 for the 64GB. We’ve received several tips over the course of the day of people heading south to snatch one up to have it work one of the AWS carriers (WIND, Mobilicity, Videotron, Eastlink), but there’s a slight twist of magic happening in Canada.

First, the Apple Canada website now lists the 1700/2100 bands in the compatibility section. This was omitted before today. This is a good sign that Apple’s directly selling the AWS iPhone online and in-stores in Canada. This leads us to our next piece of awesomeness. A reader apparently went into the Toronto Eaton Centre Apple Store and purchased the iPhone 5, cut down his WIND SIM and got it to work on their network (see images). Of course, cutting your micro-SIM to a nano-SIM is a risky move. We don’t recommend it, but if you want to try this there are cheap SIM cutters for sale on eBay. Regardless, the iPhone is now compatible on the AWS carriers network.

If you’re buying an iPhone this weekend let us know if it’s compatible with WIND or any of the other carriers.
