Virgin’s Tester Team now looking for 5 BlackBerry Q10 reviewers

With every new device that Virgin Mobile announces they offer up the chance for their subscribers (members) to test them out. We’ve seen this happen with the HTC One, BlackBerry Z10, Samsung Galaxy S4 and now the QWERTY loving BlackBerry Q10. The rules are the same – all you have to do is tell them in a 100 words or less why you’d be an awesome Virgin Mobile phone tester.

Virgin notes in the fine print that “There are five (5) spots to be filled on the VMC Tester Team. The total retail value of the prizes available is $3,500.00,” which means that Virgin might price the Q10 at $700 outright other carriers. This QWERTY/Touch BlackBerry 10 device will be available on May 1st, but make sure you check out our review here.

Sony Xperia J now available at Bell and Virgin, priced as low as $150 outright

The entry-level Sony Xperia J has arrived on both Bell and Virgin’s shelves. This runs Android OS 4.1 Jelly Bean, has a 4-inch display, 5MP camera, 1GHz single-core processor, 1700mAh battery, measures in at 9.2mm thin, and to express yourself it sports a couple removable back covers – one in white and the other in black. The Xperia J – for the specs – is priced incredibly well. Bell has this available for $0 ona 3-year or $179.95 outright. However, Virgin on the other hand has this even cheaper at $149.99 no-term.

Virgin’s “Tester Team” looking for 5 people to review the Galaxy S4

Virgin Mobile is pulling out all the cards for their “members.” Back in action is their “Tester Team” and they are looking for 5 people to test out the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4. As usual, Virgin’s application process is simple as they are looking to hear “in 100 words or less why you’d be an awesome Virgin Mobile phone tester.” In total there’s 5 spots up for grabs – which means 5 GS4 devices.

Virgin Mobile has come back with their “Tester Team” program and this time they’re giving the opportunity for 5 lucky members (subscribers) to test out the upcoming HTC One. This will be hitting stores on April 19th and all you have to do to enter is fill out their online form and tell them “why you’d be an awesome Virgin Mobile phone tester.” Pretty simple.

In addition, the fine print in the contest rules states that “The total retail value of the prizes available is $3,500.00.” This makes each HTC One worth $700. So you can bet their no-term pricing, just like TELUS and Rogers, will be around $650.

Virgin Mobile giving away a Samsung Galaxy S 4, says the approximate value is $699.99

Most Canadian carriers went live with Samsung Galaxy S 4 pre-registrations yesterday, which is a good indication that the official release date is imminent. Virgin Mobile was one of the carriers and they’ve also listed a contest were members can win a GS4. Virgin notes in the terms and conditions that “There is a total of one (1) prize available to be won. The prize consists of one (1) Samsung Galaxy S 4 smartphone (model i337M) from Virgin Mobile. Approximate value of the prize is: $699.99.”

It looks like we Canadians will be getting model number SGH-I337M. In addition, the outright price falls in line with previous flagship Galaxy device launches. The Galaxy S III ranged by carrier from $600 – $700. So prepare your pocket book.

Virgin starts BlackBerry Q10 pre-registrations, says it’s “coming soon”

Now that the BlackBerry Z10 has been actively selling in Canada it’s time to shift the focus to the QWERTY/Touch Q10. We’ve seen Rogers, Bell and TELUS all go live with “pre-registration,” but now it’s Virgin Mobile’s time. They’ve just posted their own pre-registration sign-up page and declared the 2nd BlackBerry 10 device is “coming soon.”

No indication of the cost or the exact release, probably in April. Check out our hands-on of the Q10 here.

Virgin Mobile to release Xperia J, dummy devices arrive in-store

Last week we let you know that Bell will be launching the entry-level Sony Xperia J on March 27th. If you’re wanting to score this handset on Virgin Mobile then luck is coming your way. We’ve been informed that Virgin will also welcome this Android OS 4.1 Jelly Bean device to their lineup and have priced it at $149.95 outright. In addition, the Xperia J dummy devices have already started to arrive in-store so a release date is near – probably on the same March 27th date. Other specs of the Xperia J have it coming with a 4-inch display, 5MP camera, 1.0 GHz single-core processor, 9.2mm thin and a 1700mAh battery.

Yep, Virgin Mobile also decides to double their minutes and data

Koodo was first, Fido followed. Now, as expected, Virgin Mobile has doubled up on the minutes and data offering on their “Gold Plans.” The $35/month plan now has 200 minutes and 200MB data, while the $45/month has been bumped to 400 minutes and 1GB data. Fierce competition out there…

Virgin and Bell users reporting BlackBerry 10 software update v10.0.10.85 now available to download

Last week BlackBerry pushed out the first update to their new BlackBerry 10 OS – version 10.0.10.85. At the time it was only TELUS, Koodo, Rogers and Fido customers that received the new features. Bell noted in a tweet yesterday that they’ll be making it available this week, but we’ve been tipped by both Bell and Virgin Mobile users that it’s now available to download. As a recap, here’s some of the top improvements you’ll see:

1. 3rd Party App Performance
We’ve improved performance for 3rd party applications, so developers can build apps that run fast and smooth for you. With this update, you might want to keep an eye out for some fresh new app launches in March, like WhatsApp.

2. Phone, Calendar, and Contacts
Among the top improvements and features are fixes for Gmail calendars on BlackBerry 10. You’ll also find improvements in the BlackBerry Hub for logging calls log and how conversations are handled. We’ve also made general improvements to importing contacts from online sources.

3. Camera
We’ve optimized the camera for better photos in low-light situations. You’ll love the difference this makes for photos where you don’t use a flash – like the Time Shift Camera feature.

4. Browser and Media
With more and more of you using the gorgeous screen on the BlackBerry Z10 to consume online videos and media, we’ve made a number of improvements to the software in the way the browser handles video playback to provide a fantastic experience.

5. Battery Life
The software team has included a number of battery life optimizations with over 60 battery saving improvements since launch to keep you moving. These combined improvements are designed so that you see improvements in battery life and heavy users especially should see a longer average usage per charge cycle.

Virgin Mobile Nexus 4 priced at $359 outright at The Source

Interesting. Google is selling the 16GB version of the Nexus 4 for $359 via Google Play. Earlier this week Virgin Mobile was the latest Canadian carrier to launch the pure Android device and they set the price at $399 outright. However, retail outlet The Source looks to be getting ready to sell the N4 for a solid for $359.99 – unfortunately the product code listed is not live on the site, nor do stores have stock. So this could very well be a placeholder. Regardless, those interested in scoring the Nexus 4 will have a few more options to purchase it.
