Virgin’s new contest gives members and their buddies a private pre-screening of John Carter

Here’s something cool to start February off with. If you’re thinking about joining or upgrading to a Virgin Mobile smartphone you might have the chance to win a pre-screening of the upcoming flick John Carter. It’s not just any pre-screening – Virgin will hand over the entire theatre to you and your buddies, plus also feed you with popcorn. You’ll be automatically entered once you sign up/upgrade and it officially starts on Feb. 1st, until February 23rd.

Bell and Virgin Mobile rollout HD Voice

Almost a year to the date WIND Mobile implemented HD Voice to their customers, this reportedly brought a “better quality, clearer voice service experience”. Today, both Bell and Virgin have rolled out HD Voice to their HSPA+ customers – this is available for free on select handsets. For Bell, currently the HD Voice compatible phones are the Nokia C6, Nokia C6-01, HTC Sensation and the HTC Incredible S. For Virgin Mobile, those who have the HTC Sensation and HTC Incredible S will experience HD Voice.

A few notes though: HD Voice will only work when “the call is made by and received by HD Voice compatible phones”, plus will only work when you’re in a coverage area, once you step out HD Voice will not work – but will default to regular voice. According to the Virgin Mobile internal doc we received it states that “HD Voice is not available in Manitoba or Saskatchewan”, but the Bell internal doc states that “Callers within Saskatchewan will not have access to HD Voice at launch”, plus that callers within “Extended” 4G HSPA+ coverage will also not have HD Voice at launch – most likely to do with their limited agreements with MTS and SaskTel.

As to what specifically you can expect from HD Voice on Bell or Virgin: clear call quality, richer overall sound quality, significant reduction in background noise and ease in recognizing voices when multiple peeps are talking.

Virgin adds 5 more buddies to the $35/month talk and text plan

Virgin has upped the amount of ‘buddies’ on their $35/month talk and text plan. Starting today the plan will see unlimited Canada-Wide Calling to 10 Buddies, up from 5. As the doc states above, this is in place “until further notice”. Here are the plan details:

- 10 unlimited buddies,
- Unlimited text (international text included)
- Unlimited canadian LD+ no roaming charge in Canada
- Unlimited evenings and week-ends starting at 5pm
- 200 anytime minutes
- Data starting at $5

Virgin offering new customers who BYOP (bring your own phone) monthly discounts

Virgin is focussing their attention on wooing those customers who just want to purchase a SIM card, or as Virgin puts it “BYOP” – Bring You Own Phone. You could save a bit of dough, upwards of $120/year, but depends if you purchase a talk and text plan, or a smartphone plan. The promo goes into place on Monday, January 9th and here’s the details of the savings: Customers will receive $5 off/mo. when they sign up on any 30 Day Term Talk & Text Plans; plus if they sign up on a 30 Day Term Smartphone Plan they’ll $10 off/mo. for the duration of their contract.

Virgin joins in the fun, offers 1 month free service on any talk and text plan

Last week if was the free long distance promo that made the rounds at the carriers, but this week the latest trend is to offer customers 1 month of service for free. Rogers, Fido, Public, Bell and now Virgin is giving customers 1 month free when they sign up on any talk and text plan. To get in on this you’ll have to sign up on a 3-year or the Virgin Mobile SuperTab.

Bell and Virgin release the LG Eclypse

Bell and Virgin have released the entry level Android 2.3.4 LG Eclypse. Both companies have this at the no-term price of $250, but the 3-year contract price differs. Bell has this available for $0, while Virgin has this slide-out QWERTY for $49.99. The Eclypse has a 3.5-inch touchscreen display (320 x 480), Wi-Fi hotspot, and probably the best part of this is that it comes with a 5MP camera that shoots 720p HD videos.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus officially available from Bell and Virgin Mobile

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is officially, now widely, available across Canada! Similar to other high-end devices, like the LG Optimus LTE, has reached Canadian soil yet again before other major countries. If you’re looking to score this Android OS 4.0 powered device you can go forth over at Bell and Virgin – Rogers and TELUS will follow in January. The price starts at $159.95 at Bell, Virgin has it for $159.99 on a 3-year. In addition, the Galaxy Nexus can be also be had for $649.99 outright.

Bell LG Eclypse launch delayed until December 12th, also coming to Virgin Mobile

The Bell LG Eclypse was supposed to be available on December 2nd, some sort of delay happened. This slider Android will retail for $49.95 on a 3-year and $249.95 outright. The dummy devices have started to arrive in store and a new launch date has been set for December 12th. This device will also be hitting Virgin Mobile and the price points are generally the same, $0.04 more as indicated in the above flyer from The Source. The Eclypse is about as entry-level as it gets these days.

Galaxy Nexus starts shipping to Virgin Mobile customers

This is a beautiful sign, something that will bring severe joy to Canadians. Virgin Mobile customers have started to receive notice from Purolator that the Galaxy Nexus, aka the Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 dream, will within arrive 3-5 business days. The official launch of the Galaxy Nexus is on December 8th, but Samsung, Virgin and Bell will be celebrating this release with a concert by the Sheepdogs in Toronto 1-day early on the 7th. We’re a couple days away now…
