Videotron to launch the Nokia Lumia 710

Well the recently launched HTC Radar won’t be their only Windows Phone powered device. They too will make the uber affordable Nokia Lumia 710 available. This device was once a Rogers exclusive and eventually made its way to Wind Mobile and Mobilicity. There’s no word yet on the launch date, nor the pricing, but you can expect it to be priced between the $250 and $300 outright.

Videotron launches the Samsung Galaxy Q

The Samsung Galaxy Q is making the rounds in Canada. This entry level touchscreen/QWERTY Android first hit Fido, then WIND Mobile and Mobilicity. Now, Quebec-based Videotron is jumping in on the fun by making it available to their customers. Fido, WIND and Mobi all have this priced at $200 outright… Videotron is going a different route and upping its value by saying it’s worth $239.95. You could also score this on their “reduced price” of $39.95.

Videotron increases wireless subscriber base by 22,200 in Q1, now sits at 312,800

Quebec-based Videotron seems to be chugging along nicely. Not only have they recently released several stellar smartphones (Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone), but have also offered up a few new tablets. Today parent-company Quebecor reported their Q1 2012 results and announced that revenue surged $16.9 million and that their mobile subscribers base increased by 22,200 (7.1%) to hit 312,800 (as of March 31, 2012). Pierre Karl Péladeau, President and CEO of Quebecor stated these quarterly results in wireless reflect the sectors “sustained performance.”

A device that will certainly help boost Q2 and Q3 profits is the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S III. Videotron is one of many carriers that have committed to launch this anticipated Android device.

Videotron promo sees free Galaxy Nexus with a Galaxy Tab 10.1 purchase, lots of fine print

Videotron recently released the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and just last week they launched the Galaxy Tab 10.1. To celebrate this they have bundled together a promo that sees anyone who buys the Tab will get a free Nexus. Of course there’s fine print, but a good deal if you’re into Samsung and Android. Videotron states that this is a “limited-time offer”, but there’s no end date listed. In addition, this deal is only for “residential customers subscribing simultaneously to Videotron’s mobile service and ‘Internet on your tablet’ service data add-on with a Samsung Galaxy Nexus and a Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G or adding a mobile line to their account”. Finally, the Nexus usually costs $149.95 but you’ll need to sign a a minimum 30 day contract, and you’ll receive a credit to your account “on the 31st day”.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 now available at Videotron, $549.95 outright

As promised, Videotron has released the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G today. The outright price is reasonable at $549.95 (Bell, TELUS and Rogers have this priced between $650 and $680). The “Reduced price” 3-year comes in at $399.95 and this is the carriers 3rd tablet, the others are the BlackBerry PlayBook and the HTC Flyer.

Videotron to release the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G on March 21st

Videotron has announced that they will be adding another tablet to their lineup, no not the iPad, but the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G. Launch day will officially be on March 21st and you’ll be able to but this for $399.95 with a 3-year contract, no word yet on what the no-term pricing will be – the Tab 10.1 is currently priced between $650 and $680 at TELUS, Bell and Rogers.

You can check out our hands-on of the Tab 10.1 here, but Videotron has also decided to put some preloaded bloatware apps on this Android 3.2 tablet, specifically illico web, Archambault – My Books, Clin d’œil and the e-editions of Le Journal de Montréal and Le Journal de Québec. Videotron also stated in their press release that “For a limited time, Videotron is offering free subscriptions to the e-editions of the two newspapers and a $35 archambault.ca gift certificate for digital content with the purchase of a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G.”

Videotron launches the HTC Radar, available for $399.95 outright

Quebec-based Videotron has released their first Windows Phone 7 device. The HTC Radar can be yours for “Reduced price” of $99.95 – to get this price you’ll have to sign up for a plan that’s $40/month or more. In addition, this is also available for the outright price of $399.95. Specs of this WP7 device have it running the Mango OS, a 3.8-inch display with a resolution of 480 x 800, 1GHz processor and 5MP camera that records 720p HD videos and the overall dimensions are 120 x 61.5 x 10.8mm with a weight of 137 grams.

HTC Radar coming to Videotron March 7th

March 7th will see Videotron release their first Windows Phone 7 powered device, the HTC Radar. This is already available on both SaskTel and WIND Mobile for pricing ranging from $49 on a 3yr contract to $399 outright. The only known price that we have from Videotron is the $99 on contract price, no word yet on the no-term pricing. It’s nice to see more carriers launching newer WP7 devices – the Radar has a 3.8-inch display with (resolution of 480 x 800), 1GHz processor and 5 megapixel camera that records 720p HD videos.

Total estimated Canadian wireless subscribers reaches 26,383,417

Most carriers have announced their Q4 and full 2011 results. Quebecor, Videotron’s parent-company, have released their numbers. In the release they reminded us that their 4G network coverage reaches 7 million people in Quebec, but more staggering is the increase in subscriber numbers. In 2011 Videotron experienced a growth of 154,500 subscribers, up from 136,100 in 2010 (46.8%), to take them to a total subscriber base of 290,600. Must have been all those Android devices. Q4 specifically saw 32,500 net subs. Revenues also increased $59.6 million (112.1%) to $112.7 million, which they said was “essentially due to customer growth resulting largely from the launch of the new network”. Unfortunately they do not list the ARPU (Average Revenue Per User), but they do note that it approximately costs “$489 per subscriber addition”.

So let’s break down the subscriber numbers by carrier, this will give an insight into how many wireless customers are in Canada.

Rogers: 9,335,000 subscribers
Bell: 7,427,482 subscribers
TELUS: 7,340,000 subscribers
SaskTel: 568,904 at the end of Q3 2011, Q4 N/A
MTS: 496,432 subscribers
WIND: 425,000 subscribers
Mobilicity: 300,000 subscribers (estimated)
Videotron: 290,600
Public Mobile: 199,999 subscribers

Total estimated Canadian wireless subscribers: 26,383,417. The total wireless subscribers in Canada in 2010 was 24,567,947 – these totals represent an increase of 1,815,470 subscribers, or 6.88%. In addition, based on the estimated 26,383,417 subscribers, here’s the % of the market each carrier owns:

Rogers: 35.38%
Bell: 28.15%
TELUS: 27.82%
SaskTel: 2.16%
MTS: 1.88%
WIND: 1.61%
Mobilicity: 1.14%
Videotron: 1.1%
Public Mobile: 0.76%

What’s interesting is taking a look at the CRTC’s 2010 annual “Communications Monitoring Report”. This gives an official breakdown of wireless subscribers, ARPU and revenue. In 2010 the number of wireless subscribers reached 25.8 million, an increase of 8.5% over 2009. In addition, 2010 had Rogers with the largest market share 37%, clearly losing a bit of steam this year with approximately 35.38%. Bell had 29% market share in 2010 and slightly dipped about 1% in 2011. TELUS also fell from 28% to 27.82% in 2011.

So this means that the Big 3 are slowly losing market share to either the newer players – WIND, Mobilicity, Public Mobile – or to other province only carriers like MTS, SaskTel and Videotron. Of course, this is all reflected on the numbers above being accurate, namely Mobilicity and Public Mobile. Those two companies are private and have no need to officially announce their subscriber numbers. Regardless, interesting stats.

Update: Our friend Greg O’Brien made a good point. “It’s really subscriptions (accounts) not subscribers (people). How many people have two or more accounts?”

HTC Radar “coming soon” to Videotron

SaskTel and WIND Mobile have already added the HTC Radar to their lineup. Quebec-based Videotron was actually the first carrier to be rumoured to be releasing this Windows Phone device and now they have kindly placed the familiar, yet always frustrating, “coming soon” on their site. There are no other details as to when this will be launched, or at what price points. It’ll most likely come in close to what SaskTel and Wind are selling it at, $369.99 and $399 respectively. This will be the first Windows Phone device at Videotron.
