Carriers often come out with promos to sway a customer to sign up for a long 3-year contract. We’ve seen this happen over the past several years. The recent trend is to offer up Canadian long distance and some sort of data bucket, usually between 3-5GB. Well, way up north in Thunder Bay regional carrier Tbaytel is bringing back the glory days of the 6GB promo, plus have also decided to throw in unlimited Canadian talk and text. The price is a very respectable $50/month. It’s certainly something to think about… As usual, before you sign a contract with any carrier make sure you read all the fine print.

You think competition is heated in the central parts of Ontario, Quebec, or B.C.? How about the rolling city of Thunder Bay, Ontario? According to the Canada 2011 Census there’s only 108,359 residents and you bet everyone of them counts when adding up carrier subscriber numbers.

Bell has started a campaign to woo people away from regional carrier Tbaytel by offering them an incentive to switch “and get the phone everyone is talking about for $0.” With Apple’s strict advertising guidelines Bell, of course, could not directly say the phone that “everyone is talking about” is the iPhone 5… the separate ad on the other page does the talking. It could very well be another device, but if it’s the iPhone 5 then it’s a savings of $179 on a 3-year.

Bell recently went live with their LTE (Long Term Evolution) network in Thunder Bay.

(Thanks Denise!)

The Samsung Galaxy Note is heading to Thunder Bay and surrounding areas, courtesy of the partnership between tbaytel and Rogers. Taking a look at this internal doc shows all the specs and pricing that we’re used to seeing with the Note, but one glaring omission is LTE. Currently tbaytel only has HSPA+ 4G speeds that’ll reach “up to 21Mbps”, so depending how the upcoming 700MHz spectrum auction pans out will/won’t see LTE (Long Term Evolution) reach them.

However, in the meantime this solid Android-powered device runs OS 2.3 Gingerbread and is on an upgrade path to OS 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. In addition, this comes with Samsung’s S Pen, 5.3-inch HD Super AMOLED display (1280 x 800), 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 8MP Camera that shoots 1080p videos and a 2,500 mAh battery. The Note will officially be available on tbaytel on Monday, March 12th (tomorrow) for the following prices: 3-year is $199.99; 2-year term is $399.99; 1-year for $599.99 and the no-term is $699.99.

Make sure you check out our review of the Galaxy Note here and here.

Overall, sounds like a significant upgrade. The list of when your area might be impacted is below and the downtime could last up to 4 hours:

Monday September 19th: Vickers, Court Street
Monday September 19th: Academy, Lithium, Riverview
Tuesday September 20th: Rosslyn, Hazelwood, Main Street
Tuesday September 20th: Wardrope, Current River, Neebing
Northern Ontario based Tbaytel has joined other carriers by renaming their 3G network to “4G”. They network share with Rogers and their 4G HSPA+ network is simply a name change that Don Campbell, President & CEO Tbaytel, states is “for consumers to accurately compare Tbaytel’s network to those of other carriers, it is important for Tbaytel to follow suit and rename its network accordingly.”

The Nexus S is one of the first smartphones to be widely available across multiple carriers, thus creating a price war. The 3-year contract price ranges from $99.99 to $149.99 depending on who you get it from. In addition, the no-term pricing is the most heated from a low $425 to $525. We’ve forgotten to mention Tbaytel way up north who has an arrangement with Rogers for devices. They started to carry the Nexus S and have by far the greatest spectrum of price plans. They actually come in the lowest at $49.99 on a 3-year contract but skyrocket to the most expensive at $549.99 no-term. If you’re thinking no-term it’s probably best to make the trek a few kilometers to any one of the other carriers and save some money.

If you’re up in the Thunder Bay area then you’ll be thrilled to know that TBayTel will be going live with their HSPA network on November 15th. Their HSPA nework will expand through Norther Ontario and be completed December 2011). More importantly they will carry about 29 new devices (thanks to Rogers) that include the Apple iPhone 4 and 3GS, BlackBerry Torch 9800, Curve 9300, Pearl 9100, Samsung and Motorola devices.
