HTC Radar “Coming Soon” to SaskTel

SaskTel has come forward and announced the HTC Radar will be “coming soon” to their lineup. No clear timeline, but SaskTel proudly states you’ll be able to “Master social networking with an intuitive phone that has your life front and centre”. As for specs, the Radar has a 3.8-inch display with a resolution of 480 x 800, 1GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera that captures 720p HD videos, VGA front-facing camera. Interestingly, earlier this week it was revealed that Videotron would be launching this Windows Phone Mango device sometime in the Spring. We’ll have more info soon, but it’s great to see so many new WP7 devices hitting Canadian land.

SaskTel Visual Voicemail now available to Android users

Quick update for those customers with SaskTel. The regional carrier has now made Visual Voicemail available to Android devices (OS 2.1 or higher), previously it was only available on the iPhone. This will cost you $5/month, but the app is free. Now you can read or listen to you voice messages without going into your voicemail. In addition, for those BlackBerry users, SaskTel is still working on getting Visual Voicemail to you.

SaskTel launching Galaxy Nexus January 13th

Let’s start the morning off right for those over in Saskatchewan. Regional carrier SaskTel is on tap to release the Samsung Galaxy Nexus soon. This Android OS 4.0 powered device will range in price between the $159.99 3-year contract to $599.99 outright. Like all high-end devices the carriers always put “coming soon”, but you can vanish that thought from your mind as the internal doc above says it’ll be hitting stores on January 13th – which is this Friday.

SaskTel joins the Galaxy Nexus party, says it’s “coming soon”

Everyone is coming out of the Nexus woodwork now. First it was TELUS, then Videotron and now SaskTel with news that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is “coming soon”. Again, no prices or dates, but those interested in going through SaskTel can “register for updates” via a text message. In addition, now that the friendly Saskatchewan carrier has their 4G network back in order, they have also decided to throw a contest together and giveaway three Galaxy Nexus devices.

SaskTel improves 4G network, “Call drops have been reduced to under 1%, with call completions at 98%”

Over the past few months SaskTel 4G customers were complaining of “calls not going through or calls being dropped”. To remedy the “network congestion issues”, SaskTel installed several COWS (Cellular On Wheels) and performed maintenance to their towers/cell sites. In a press release SaskTel stated “Holy COW Ongoing Enhancements Have Improved 4G!” and also declared expanded coverage into 11 more areas. SaskTel now claims that there is “an approximate 50% overall capacity improvement”, which has resulted in the number of dropped calls to be “reduced to under 1%, with call completions at 98%”. To keep them clear of any further customer disappointments, SaskTel put a gentle reminder that “wireless technology will never be 100% reliable”. In addition, here’s the list of the new coverage area:

- Candle Lake Northwest: provides coverage to the northwest end of Candle Lake Provincial Park
- Carnduff: provides coverage within the town of Carnduff
- Dinsmore: provides coverage to the town of Dinsmore and the surrounding area including highways 42 & 44
- Dinsmore Coteau Hills: provides coverage to the area south of Dinsmore including highway 42
- Hazel Dell: provides coverage to the area between Kelvington and Preeceville including highway 49
- MacDowall: provides coverage to the area southwest of Prince Albert including highway 11
- Mankota: provides coverage to Mankota and the surrounding area including highways 18 and 19
- Rapid View: provides coverage to the area west of Meadow Lake including the town of Rapid View and highway 55
- Shoal Lake: provides coverage to the community of Shoal Lake northeast of Melfort
- Willow Brook: provides coverage to the area west of Yorkton including highway 52

LG Eclypse now available at SaskTel

SaskTel has joined Bell and Virgin by releasing the QWERTY slider LG Eclypse. The best part of this launch is for an entry level device it comes with decent specs: Android OS 2.3.4, 1 Ghz processor, 3.5-inch touchscreen display, Wi-Fi, and a 5 megapixel camera that shoots 720p videos. As for pricing the no-term is $299.99, but you can also get this for $49.99 on a 3-year (probably will drop to $0.00 soon).

LG Eclypse “coming soon” to SaskTel

The LG Eclypse is coming to Bell and Virgin Mobile on December 12th, and it also looks like the QWERTY slider Android is heading to SaskTel. Respectable entry level device that has a 1 Ghz processor, 3.5-inch touchscreen display and a 5MP camera that captures 720p videos. The 3-year contract price is the same as their competitors at $49.99, but the no-term price is $50 more at $299.99. SaskTel states the Eclypse is “coming soon”.

BlackBerry Bold 9790 now available at SaskTel

The Bold 9790 has hit the shelves at SaskTel… this “iconic BlackBerry design” comes with a a 2.4-inch touchscreen display, full QWERTY keyboard, 1GHz processor, runs BlackBerry 7 OS, NFC capabilities and a 5MP camera. The price, currently $129.99 on a 3-year and ranges upward to $469.99 outright. The 3-year price will most likely fall a bit within the next few weeks.

SaskTel terminates CTO and 9 managers, 4G network issues continue

SaskTel has been on a good track recently – kicking their “4G” network open, announcing future plans to deploy LTE, launching the latest smartphones. Everything seems to be going so smooth, until recently. Over the past month there’s been some connectivity issues, customers were mainly complaining of “calls not going through or calls being dropped”. On a couple occasions SaskTel issued press releases stating they are performing “4G network improvements” to meet the demand. The Crown corp Saskatchewan-based carrier even went as far as installing 11 portable cell towers, also known as COWS (Cellular On Wheels), to improve service in certain areas.

Today brings some unfortunate news. Apparently the company has terminated the employment of their CTO and nine managers. They will all receive severance packages, but SaskTel management ensures that the sudden lay offs had nothing to the recent 4G network issues. Corporate relations VP Darcee MacFarlane stated that “these are from several different departments, including regulatory and information technology. Those exact job descriptions aren’t being filled again, they’re not required, but we are adding in other areas.”

SaskTel is continuing to improve their 4G coverage in the province.

BlackBerry Bold 9790 and Curve 9380 coming to SaskTel

More BlackBerry news for you to start this week off. SaskTel will be making a bit of space on their shelves for the Bold 9790 and the Curve 9380. Although it says on their site these smartphones are “coming soon”, SaskTel retailer Jump has already received shipments and actively selling the all-touch Curve – the Bold should make its way there later this week, or early next. The prices are basically the same of the Big 3, SaskTel will be selling the Curve 9380 for $49.99 on a 3-year and topping out at $379.99 no-term. As for the QWERTY touchscreen Bold 9780, this will run you $129.99 on 3-year to $469.99 outright.
