MTS launches their “Wireless Protection Program”

Majority of our Canadian carriers have some sort of system in place when a customer unintentionally damages their device. For Rogers customers it’s “Handset Protection Guarantee”, TELUS has the “Device Protection Plan”, Bell has the “Smart/Phone Care” program and SaskTel recently launched their “Wireless Device Protection Plan”.

Now joining the others is MTS with their “Wireless Protection Program”. There are a few different price points that offer different level of protection. Topping out at the highest is the “Complete Program” for $7/month. This covers you for accidental damage (including liquid damage), loss, theft, and malfunction after the manufacturer warranty expires (The Wireless Protection Program is not available for iPhones). For $5/month the Enhanced Program gives you everything the Complete Program does, but doesn’t cover any device malfunctions past the warranty period. Finally, the Extended Warranty Program simply cover the device for any malfunction after the manufacturer warranty expires, this is priced at $3/month.

MTS BlackBerry Bold 9900 upgrade to OS 7.0.0.585 now available to download

So this isn’t the biggest news on the Canadian block, but good for those MTS customers who have the BlackBerry Bold 9900. An upgrade to OS 7.0.0.585 is now available to download. If you’re planning of keeping up with the latest, make sure you back up your device before proceeding.

iPhone 4S now available at MTS & SaskTel

The New iPhone 4S has been out for 2-weeks today, which means both MTS and SaskTel have the glory of bringing this iOS 5 device to their customers. It’s now available on both regional carriers, so residents of both provinces can get hooked on Siri. As expected, same prices as everyone else: 16GB is $159.99 on a 3-year and $649.99 outright; 32GB version is $269.99 on a 3-year and $749.99 outright.

BlackBerry Curve 9360 released by MTS, can be yours for $509.99 outright!?!

Not to undermine the elegant looking BlackBerry Bold 9900 that was released today by MTS, but the carrier has also added the entry-level Curve 9360 to their lineup. If you’re into 3-year contract then this has come in at $29.99, but the no-term pricing is completely bonkers. While most carriers are offering the 9360 for $350, MTS has this listed for $509.99 outright – not even with NFC enabled is it worth that price (sorry MTS).

MTS launches the BlackBerry Bold 9900

Manitoba-regional carrier MTS has followed through and delivered the BlackBerry Bold 9900 to its customers. This is now available and still the best looking BlackBerry to-date, until those new BBX BlackBerry smartphones come out. MTS has priced the 9900 lower than some carriers at a reasonable $99.99 on a 3-year and ranges to $579.99 no-term. Quick reminder of its specs: BlackBerry 7 OS, a 2.8-inch touchscreen withe a full QWERTY keyboard, 1.2 GHz processor, Wi-Fi, 5 megapixel camera that shoots 720p HD videos.

MTS to release the BlackBerry Curve 9360

MTS has already released the BlackBerry Torch 9810 and they stated the Bold 9900 should be available sometime by the end of this month. In addition, for those who are not interested in a high-end BlackBerry smartphone might want the new Curve 9360. This is arrived on the BlackBerry software download section and will be making its way to the MTS lineup soon. No word on the official launch date or pricing, but a good entry Berry. Good work on MTS’ part for bringing on both BlackBerry devices that have NFC-capabilities enabled.

MTS bringing LTE to Manitoba in 2012

MTS just launched their new “4G”, really HSPA+ network, on March 31st but expansion plans are already in the works. The regional carrier says LTE (Long Term Evolution) will be coming to Manitoba in 2012. They give no definite date but do say that “planning and infrastructure development is well underway”. MTS says customers will be able to get peak speeds up to 75Mbps “with future data rates of 150 Mbps and beyond”. In addition, there was no indication of the devices, but reading the press release says they might have a few at launch, probably what Rogers has with the LTE Samsung Galaxy S II, HTC Jetstream and internet sticks.

There are a couple interesting points in the release. First, it states they will have a roaming partner, probably Rogers. “LTE devices have access to MTS’s extensive 4G network and roaming capabilities in locations where LTE is not yet available”. Then, MTS notes that “MTS customers will be among the first in the province to experience this world leading technology”… which could possibly mean that LTE might be in place in Manitoba before MTS launches, perhaps Rogers, Bell or TELUS has plans.

The good news is that LTE is coming to Manitoba.

MTS prepping to release the Nexus S

Last week we let you know that Rogers placed the Nexus S on the discontinued list, which could mean a new Nexus is en route. However, picking up where Rogers left of is regional carrier MTS. We’ve been informed that the Nexus S and all its Google Android pureness will be launching “in the coming weeks” (MTS receives discontinued Rogers devices). No prices have been relayed on to us but this will be a great addition to their lineup.

MTS releases the BlackBerry Torch 9810 for a whopping $624.99 no-term

Here it is Canada – the most expensive no-term price for the new BlackBerry Torch 9810. This QWERTY touchscreen slider topped off at $599.99 at Bell, Rogers, TELUS and Virgin. SaskTel came in a bit cheaper at $574.99… but it’s regional carrier MTS that takes home the belt with a mind boggling price tag of $629.99 outright. Of course there are other options, you can always opt for the 3-year contract at $149.99.

The Torch 9810 is now available at MTS and this comes loaded with BlackBerry 7 OS, 1.2GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera that shoots 720p HD video and 3.2-inch touchscreen display with that familiar full slide out QWERTY keyboard.

If you’re a customer of MTS you’ll be able to purchase or upgrade to a couple new BlackBerry 7 devices. As expected, the BlackBerry Torch 9810 and BlackBerry Bold 9900 will be available soon… MTS stated “in coming weeks”, but a press release gives a bit more insight, “The BlackBerry Torch 9810 will make its debut at the end of August followed by the BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone in early October.”
