Nokia Music official launch in Canada imminent, preloaded on Koodo Lumia 520

Nokia is throwing a celebration of its music prowess next Wednesday, May 15th in Toronto to show off “the next chapter of music discovery in Canada.”

It’s expected that Nokia Music finally land here, the free streaming radio service offered to select Lumia devices in the U.S. and around the world. Another hint of its pending arrival is buried within the “Phone Features” section of Koodo’s Nokia Lumia 520 listing, where it offers Nokia Music as an option.

Nokia Music offers a curated selection of “mixes” broken down by favourite artists or music that you have stored locally on the phone. One of its best features is the ability to store these mixes offline for playback when you have no service. It’s sort of like Slacker Radio’s caching abilities, but made specifically for Windows Phone.

If is also available to download now on a number of Windows Phone 8 devices, including our unlocked Lumia 920. Because it’s not launching until next week, your mileage may vary in terms of availability, but from what we’ve seen, the free version is great. There is also a $3.99 subscription available for increased offline storage capabilities and lyrics.

Nokia has already offers a number of exclusive features to Lumia devices, including HERE Maps, HERE Drive+ Beta, HERE Transit and more. Adding Nokia Music to the list should help extend the company’s lead over HTC and Samsung in the Windows Phone space, and bolster its potential marketing touch points when compared to Android, iPhone and BlackBerry 10.

Update: Nokia Lumia 520 now available on Koodo, TELUS May 17th

Rogers released the entry-level Nokia Lumia 520 today for $199.99. This Windows Phone 8 device will also be coming to Koodo Mobile tomorrow. According to a press release the Lumia 520 will make also make an appearance on TELUS’ prepaid lineup next week:

“The device is also available at Koodo on May 9th in black for $150 or $0 on the tab. On May 17th, it will be available at TELUS in black for $149 with a TELUS pre-paid plan.”

If you’re into the Windows Phone OS then the pricing is incredibly reasonable for the specs: 4-inch display, 5MP camera, 8GB internal memory, 1GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 1430mAh battery.

In addition, the Lumia 520 will only be available in black, but there will be exchangeable back covers in yellow, red and white “available at local retail stores.”

TELUS and Koodo LG Optimus Black upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich finally available to download

The LG Optimus Black, both on TELUS and Koodo, has finally received the update to Android OS 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. This is now available and users of this one-time flagship should have received a notification on their device.

Koodo Mobile prices the BlackBerry Q10 at $625 outright

Koodo currently has the lowest outright price of the Samsung Galaxy S4 at $625. According to their website, Koodo now lists the BlackBerry Q10 as ‘coming soon’ and decided to match this $625 retail price point. The QWERTY/Touch is expected to hit stores on May 1st.

Lowest Samsung Galaxy S4 outright price, so far, goes to Koodo at $625

Koodo Mobile might snatch up some additional subscribers with the upcoming Galaxy S4 launch. Most carriers have come out with the no-term pricing between $650 – $700, Koodo has priced this 5-inch beast at $625. No word yet from Wind Mobile, Mobilicity or Fido’s on what their outright prices will be… but you can bet they’ll all fiercely compete.

In addition, Koodo is only listing the Black Mist version, the White Frost is missing.

Nokia Lumia 520 coming soon to Koodo Mobile

Another Windows Phone 8 device is heading to our fine land. Koodo Mobile announced plans on Facebook that the Nokia Lumia 520 is coming soon. No details on pricing, launch dates or colours – this officially comes in Yellow, Red, White, Black and Blue. The Lumia 520 is an entry-level WP8 with a 4-inch display, 5MP camera, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 1430mAh battery and weighs in at 124 grams.

Update: Nexus 4 arrives online at Koodo for $400

The Google Nexus 4 has arrived at Koodo Mobile today. If you’re interested in scoring this pure Android Jelly Bean smartphone then you can simply waltz your way online or to your local kiosk and drop down $400, or sign up on their Tab system. This is the 16GB version.

Update: Koodo has updated their site and now show the Nexus 4 as ‘coming soon.’ Perhaps it’ll be available tomorrow.

Update: Koodo has shed the “coming soon” and the Nexus 4 is now available online for $400 outright, or you can use their Tab payment system.

Nexus 4 and BlackBerry Q10 coming soon to Koodo Mobile

Koodo Mobile took to Facebook today to inform Canadians that a couple more solid smartphones will soon be available. The new QWERTY/Touch BlackBerry Q10 and the ‘pure Google’ LG Nexus 4.

“FACEBOOK EXCLUSIVE: The BlackBerry Q10 is coming to Koodo! Check back for more details.”
“FACEBOOK EXCLUSIVE: You spoke and we listened. We are working to get the LG Nexus 4. More details to come in a few weeks.”

No further details on pricing, but these will come close to what competing carriers are selling at. The Q10 is ranges in price between $600 – $700 outright, while the Nexus 4 no-term cost is around the $425 to $550 mark – of course the cheapest way to score a Nexus 4 today is via Google Play.

Koodo Mobile doubles up minutes and data in latest promo

El Tabador, Koodo Mobile’s mascot, is feeling the love and flexing his muscles.

In the latest promo they’ve decided to double the number of minutes and also data. This is a similar promo that launched a couple months back. All the basic talk/text plans now offer up a minimum 100 minutes per month and unlimited texts for $20, then increases to an unlimited offering for $50/month. As for the talk, text and data plans the lowest offering is $30/month which gives 150 minutes and 200MB data, then increases to $60/month for unlimited minutes and 2 GB of data.

Koodo Mobile launching new Pay-Per-Use Data plans

Koodo Mobile is on the cusp of changing up their plans again, specifically the pay-per-use data plans. According to this brochure – which will go into place on February 14th – Koodo will be adding one more tier to their offering, plus looks to be giving a bit more data. Below are all the details: old vs. new:

Old Pay-Per-Use Data Saver (until February 13th):
0MB: $0/month
Up to 25MB: $5/month
Up to 100MB: $10/month
Up to 250MB: $15/month
Up to 500MB: $20/month

New Pay-Per-Use Data Saver (effective February 14th):
0MB: $0/month
Up to 25MB: $5/month
Up to 100MB: $10/month
Up to 300MB: $15/month
Up to 1GB: $20/month
Up to 3GB: $30/month
