Yesterday we let you know that Fido is preparing to refresh their lineup. An internal doc showed that the LG Optimus L7 and the HTC One S will be launching soon. Now we have another smartphone coming to the Fido brand. This time it’s the new Sony Xperia U – a mid-range Android that comes with Android 2.3 (probably will get bumped up to OS 4.0), 5MP camera, VGA front-facing camera, 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM and a 3.5 inch display. This should be hitting stores soon and we have no indication of price points yet. However, it looks like Fido is stacking up to compete.

(Thanks tipster!)

We’ve known for a couple months now that the LG Optimus L7 was heading to Canadian soil, hitting Rogers “Lite” lineup. What we didn’t know this “L-Style” series Android was also going to be released by Fido, one of Rogers sub-brands. The above screenshot shows it’s on the roadmap, but no word yet on either a launch date or pricing. Most likely we’ll see this become available within the next couple months. The L7 comes with a 4.3-inch display, runs Android OS 4.0 ICS, 1GHz processor, 5MP camera and is 8.7mm thin.

We’ll have more info soon!
Fido is on the list of Canadian carriers to release the HTC One S later this month, still no confirmation on when this will be available or at what price points. The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich device is also heading to Bell, Virgin, TELUS and SaksTel. In addition to this powerhouse device, Fido will be stacking up their smartphone lineup by releasing the BlackBerry Bold 9790.

This Bold was originally released last December and is a mid-level Berry that comes with a 2.45-inch display (480×360), BlackBerry 7 OS, 1Ghz processor, 5MP camera, WiFi, NFC and weighs a paltry 107 grams. Our review of the 9790 is here, as for the price, parent-company Rogers is currently selling this for $399.99 outright so it’ll come in around this price.

More soon!
(Thanks to everyone who sent this in!)

When Rogers went live with their LTE network last June they gave customers the ability to reach peak download speeds of up to 75Mbps, realistically it’s between 12Mbps – 25Mbps. LTE has exploded in Canada as we’ve seen Bell and TELUS launch their networks. Recently Virgin Mobile decided to light up their LTE network (hooked onto Bell’s LTE network), but currently only have the option to activate the new iPad.

Rogers stated on a few occasions that their was no intention to bring LTE to their sub-brand Fido, however taking a look at this screenshot might show otherwise. Apparently when the employees click on this screen to activate/upgrade a customer the option of “LTE Voice and Data Sharing Bundles” pops up. So this could mean that LTE speeds are coming soon to Fido, just no word of when or what devices.

We’ll have more info for you soon.
(Thanks tipster!)

Quick and important plan update here for those on Fido. They’ve recently opened up the flood gates to have their $50 Unlimited Canada-wide talk/text plan available on 3-year terms (basically for those who sign up for a smartphone contract). This was previous only available to customers on a 2-year or no-contract, but now those interested in having a no-zone restrictions can go forth. Just remember that you’ll need to sign up for a data add-on. Also, Fido will probably throw in the first month free and if you smooth talker you can probably get Voicemail and Caller ID at a discount. Worth trying for… here are the details:

Minutes: Unlimited Canada wide
- Incoming Calls: Unlimited Canada wide
- Circle Calling: Unlimited Canada wide
- Evenings & Weekends: Unlimited Canada wide
Text Messaging
- (From Canada to Canada Wireless Number)
- (Unlimited Outgoing International Text From Canada)
- (From Canada to US or International Number)

This plan went live on March 9th and has not shown up online yet. There’s additional proof of customers scoring this deal over on HowardForums here.

Fido has rolled out a new data flex plan specifically for the iPad. This was originally scheduled to be available over a month ago and has nothing to do with the upcoming Apple iPad 3 event on Wednesday, however the timing is impeccable. As you can see the above internal doc shows the rates starting at $10 for up to 150MB, then $25 for up to 1GB and rises to $35/month for up to 5GB. Any overage is clocked in at 2¢/MB, plus a lovely “one-time activation fee of $35 applies”.

Fido makes a point to remind their customers that the “iPads are not available for purchase in Fido retail and dealer stores”, so this means that you’ll have to go the Apple Store or Apple Authorized Resellers and purchase one, then go to Fido and activate your microSIM. There are a few stipulations, such as this plan is not available to “iPads purchased outside of Canada”, and “Wi-Fi only iPad models”. Finally, Fido made a graph that compares their plan to the other carriers (below).

(Thanks tipster!)

If you want to receive your voicemails in an audio file or text format, plus have one of the supported Android or BlackBerry devices, then you can now benefit from Visual Voicemail Plus. Both Rogers and Fido have made this available to their customers, it’s $9/month, or it’s included in various Value Packs add-on. Currently the only devices that VVP is available on are the following:

Rogers: BlackBerry Bold 9700, Torch 9800, Sony Ericsson X10 and the Samsung Galaxy Q.
Fido: BlackBerry Curve 9360 and the Samsung Galaxy Q.

More devices will be added to list soon, here’s a list of what we currently know: BlackBerry Curve 9300 (March 9th), Samsung Galaxy S II LTE (March 13th), BlackBerry Bold 9780 (March 16th), Samsung Captivate (March 17th).

More here at Rogers and Fido
