However, since hearing the news that rival carrier WIND Mobile will be beating them and launching the OS 4.0 powered device on the Feb. 3rd, Mobilicity has decided to make the Galaxy Nexus available today. The price point is $599.99 and they are also throwing in a free Samsung HM1100 Bluetooth headset. This has not yet appeared on their site and in the press release it stated the Galaxy Nexus will only be available at “select Mobilicity stores across Canada”. We’ve reached out to Mobi for the complete list of locations.

From the looks of this internal doc it sure seems that Mobilicity is itching to clear inventory, specifically all their Samsung devices. Could be because the Galaxy Nexus is officially launching on February 6th… which is the same day all the above devices go on sale. As you can see the Samsung Nexus S drops by $50 to a low $299.99, followed by the Galaxy Mini to $129.99 ($40 off), and finally the entry-level G-Touch hits $79.99 outright. Something to consider – the only device that will receive an upgrade to OS 4.0 is the Nexus S.

Mobilicity is having an event in Toronto tonight with a few HowardForums members, aptly titled “HoFoLicity”. During the event there’s some talk about the Big 3 spectrum hoarding, but from a device perspective it’s the Galaxy Nexus that’s taking the limelight. It’s been known that it’s “coming soon”, but on Twitter they officially announced that the Android OS 4.0 device will be launching on February 6th. So this makes it less than 2-weeks away, but no word yet on price points. If Mobilicity is launching on the 6th, you could also assume that WIND and Videotron will be on the same date.

During the holiday season Mobilicity came out with a $40 all-in plan called the “Happier Holidays Plan”. This recently expired, but history seems to be repeating itself as it’s been brought back to life as the “Super Savings” plan. You can all thank the upcoming Super Bowl XLVI for the plan discount. Again, it’s $40/month and includes Unlimited talk, text and data, North American Long Distance, Caller ID, Voicemail, Global Texting, Call waiting, call forwarding an 3-way calling. The plan will go into place starting Wednesday, January 25th and be available until February 5th. Hopefully the Galaxy Nexus launches before the 5th…

In a mid-November 2011 press release wireless carrier Mobilicity stated that “since launching service in Toronto in May of 2010, Mobilicity has attracted over 250,000 customers to join its service and has by far the highest ARPU among the startup new entrants”. The company operates in Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary and has several points of distribution: corporate stores, dealer stores and various retailers such as Zellers, Staples, Walmart and a few Metro grocery stores.

However, it now seems there’ll be some dramatic change happening. We’ve received an internal document which states Mobilicity will be shifting their corporate store structure around. There’s currently 27 corporate stores – but the new direction is to sell off 22 of these locations and only keep 1 corporate-owned store per city (i.e. one in Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary). According to the document, which was written by President & COO Stewart Lyons, said that “You may notice notice some changes at the corporate store channel as we transition many of them back to dealer ownership, which they were originally. We are heading back to 1 store per market, which in alignment with our strategic plan. However, many of these stores are high performers, and dealers are interested in acquiring and operating them.” In addition, each store has an average of 4-6 employees and no word on what will happen to their jobs when the transition occurs.

There could be several reasons why Mobilicity is trimming the number of stores down. Yes, this could add fuel to the rumours of rival carrier WIND Mobile buying Mobilicity, or even their rumoured IPO… the less overhead the better for both these scenarios. Probably most obvious is to save money. Even with 250,000 subs it’s gotta be tough to make money when you’re selling $12-40 monthly rate plans. Mobilicity has always been the low-cost carrier. Everything from their handset prices and rate plans. Cutting down on their monthly store lease and employee salaries would save the company money.

Another document that we received, titled “Strategic Objectives”, says they have a “Commitment to being frugal with cash wherever possible”. Guess cutting corporate stores is where it starts.

(Thanks tipsters!)

For those waiting on other carrier announcements, specifically Mobilicity, you can count on this arriving in their lineup too.

On Twitter, Stewart Lyons, the new President & COO of Mobilicity, confirmed that the Galaxy Nexus is “coming soon”. No word on when, most likely sometime in January. It’s no HTC Amaze, nor the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, but the Huawei U2801 made its Canadian appearance on WIND last week for $65 and we thought that was cheap. Mobilicity has just released this very entry level device a low $49.99 outright price. Good for those just wanting to talk and text, especially with their holiday plans. The Huawei U2801, looks circa 1999 and has a small 1.8-inch display, barely has a camera (VGA), but weighs only 92 grams.

Mobilicity has stepped into another retail environment, this time testing their luck in a few Metro grocery stores. The new “smart” carrier is currently in trials with 9 locations in Toronto and Ottawa, but hopes to grow into one of their main distribution points.

This is Metro’s first venture into the mobile phone space, most likely to keep up with competitor Loblaws who’s been in it for years, and has recently solidified their commitment by expanding The Mobile Shop brand, which also houses everyone but Mobilicity: Bell, Solo, Virgin, Fido, Virgin, Public Mobile, Wind Mobile, TELUS and PC Mobile.

Anthony Booth, Mobilicity Chief Customer Officer, stated that “Metro fits perfectly into our retail distribution expansion strategy. We look forward to growing our presence at Metro over the holidays and into the New Year as we make it easy for consumers to access the ultimate in unlimited talk, text and data plans while they shop for groceries.”

Mobilicity recently announced that they have “attracted over 250,000 customers”.

Mobilicity customers started reporting network issues around 4pm, first it was the inability to make outgoing calls, but there seems there’s a bigger issue at hand because it’s now dragged on for hours. On their Twitter account Mobilicity acknowledged they are “experiencing some difficulty on some voice calls in all markets; working on solt’n. Thanks 4 patience. Will keep you posted.”

If you opt to call into customer service you are greeted with a recording that is updated every 30 minutes, the last time I called was at 7:30pm and it stated that “Important message update as of 7:30pm Eastern Standard Time. We are currently experiencing a issue with outbound calls. Inbound calls are completed intermittently. Please note that data remains unaffected. We are working to resolve this issues, and will provide an further update in 30 minutes. We apologize for this inconvenience.”

Mobilicity operates service in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Ottawa and the outage spreads across the country, not singled out in one location. We are hearing various reports of when service will be completely restored, some are stating within the hour, others are apparently hearing sometime tomorrow.

Mobilicity customers – are you still having issues?

Update – Mobilicity has just sent us a note with an update: “All markets’ voice calling (excl. Toronto) is now back to operating normally, and Toronto is almost completely restored. We will advise affected customers of what we might do for them within 24 hours. Thank you.”

Update #2 (10:40pm): Mobilicity tweeted that “voice service back to normal in GTA & all markets. Resolved CLEC partner’s tech failure. Apologies for any inconvience. Thx.”
