Over 170 billion iOS apps have been downloaded since July 2010 according to a report by market intelligence firm App Annie.

The firm released a report yesterday full of data about how the App Store has evolved since its debut nearly a decade ago.

Those 170 billion apps also represent more than $130 billion in consumer spending from July 2010 until December 2017.

Additionally, App Store users reportedly outspent Google Play store users in 2017. The iOS App Store had about 66 percent of total consumer spending worldwide, despite only having 30 percent of app downloads.

How much money apps make

Additionally, more iOS apps than ever are making over a million dollars.

In 2017, 2,293 apps generated between $1 USD and $10 million USD. Another 564 broke the $10 million USD threshold.

In total, 2,857 iOS apps generated more than $1 million USD last year.

Games are the number one spend on the App Store. Games earned 75 percent of consumer spending despite only having 31 percent of downloads.

Who spends the most on apps

China has also grown to take second place for downloads and spending. The country boasts 39.9 billion downloads and $27.7 billion USD in consumer spending. The U.S. still holds first place with 40.1 billion downloads and $36.0 billion in consumer spending.

Canada had the eighth highest downloads with 3.9 billion and sixth highest spending with $3 billion USD.

Furthermore, in-app subscriptions are growing rapidly. Spotify and other audio subscription apps have held top spots for years, but three video apps — Netflix, Tencent Video and iQiyi — were in the top five for 2017. Tinder also gained a spot in the top five.

Expectations are that the App Store will continue to grow. Spending is predicted to grow to $75.7 billion in the next five years, a growth of 80 percent by 2022.
