Tesla Model X first-ever SUV to receive top rating in every crash test category

Tesla Model X

Tesla’s Model X is now the first-ever SUV to achieve five-star ratings in every category in crash tests conducted by the U.S.’ National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

In its tests, the federal government organization assesses the structure of the vehicle and the seatbelt and airbag restraint system. This is done through frontal, side and pole crashes conducted on different sides of the vehicle.

The NHTSA released a video of the Tesla Model X crash test, showing the vehicle get crushed from various angles.

In a blog post, Tesla said Model X occupants have a 93 percent probability of avoiding serious injury in a crash. The reason for the Model X’s enhanced protection is because of the car’s “all-electric architecture and powertrain design.”

Mounted beneath the floor of the Model X is a fortified battery pack, which creates a low centre of gravity. According to Tesla, this leads to the lowest rollover probability of any SUV on the road.
