Come July, residents of Saskatchewan will no longer have access to SaskTel’s CDMA network. That’s because the company will shutting off its Code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless network on July 5th, 2017.

SaskTel’s decision to terminate its CDMA network is a result of the company’s priority to provide 4G and LTE wireless services.

“As technologies evolve, it becomes necessary to turn down older networks so we can repurpose spectrum to focus on newer, faster networks that deliver improved experiences,” said Ron Styles, SaskTel president and CEO, in a media release.

As of the time of this article, SaskTel represents one of only three Canadian telecoms to provide some form of CDMA service.

Sogetel Mobilite out of Quebec and Bell are the only two other telecoms that offer CDMA service.

Telus shut off its CDMA network on May 31st, 2017.

Bell plans on terminating its CDMA service in Ontario, Quebec, the Maritime provinces, as well as the Fort Nelson area of British Columbia, in April 2018.

SaskTel recommends that customers consult a SaskTel store or dealer to find out if they will be affected by the network shut down.
