Twitter announces live programming agreements with NBA, Live Nation, Buzzfeed and more

Twitter is continuing its foray into live streaming with a slew of new partnerships.

Following on its limited rollout of broadcasting select NFL, MLB, Wimbledon and NHL live events in 2016, Twitter is making 2017 count by announcing its first Digital Content NewFronts that takes shape in a 24/7 streaming with Bloomberg, and several agreements in core areas such as sports, news and entertainment.

In total, there are thirteen partners and Canadians will have access to most, with the exception of the Stadium deal as there are already broadcasting agreements in place with Canadian content providers. So, this means no NHL live streaming content via Twitter.

Here is the complete list of the upcoming live programs:

“Live streaming video has become a huge part of the Twitter experience for millions of Canadians and today’s announcement will take that experience to the next level,” says Rory Capern, managing director of Twitter Canada in a statement to MobileSyrup.

“From Periscope 360 broadcasts by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to nightly broadcasts of The Agenda with Steve Paikin from TVO, we continue to see a vast array of top video content on Twitter from across Canada and around the world. Canadians will now be able to have more options, whether they’re looking for news, sports, entertainment or tech content. We truly have something for everyone.”

“We could not be prouder of the success we have achieved so quickly since launching live streaming premium content. Last quarter, we streamed over 800 hours of live premium content from leading brands across sports, esports, news, and entertainment,” said Twitter COO Anthony NotoNoto. “Adding these 12 new live deals tonight is a testament to the success of our only-on-Twitter experience, combining high quality streaming video with our only-on-Twitter conversation.”

Twitter currently has 328 million users and recently reported Q1 2017 revenues of $548 million USD.
