Reddit discussion boards to undergo major overhaul

Reddit meeting

Reddit it bringing major changes to how its discussion boards work, company CEO Steve Huffman has announced.

Until now, moderators could customize how different subreddits stand out from one another other through the use of CSS (cascading style sheets). These could change anything from banner images, icons fonts and more.

But now, the site is doing away with CSS, Huffman wrote in a Reddit post, citing coding language as being difficult to learn and a cause for slower page loading.

As well, Reddit says that over half its traffic comes from mobile, and with CSS being web-only, this means a significant part of its user base haven’t been able to take advantage of it.

As a result, the site will replace CSS with a new system in the “coming months.” Via widgets, users will be able to access community calendars and “a lot of the functionality” from sidebars. Everything is intended to work on mobile and desktop versions of Reddit. The ultimate goal is to retain the same functionality of the old site, just under a different toolset.

Speaking directly to the last point, Huffman said that header images and flair colours will render on both desktop and mobile after the changes.

Huffman says that Reddit is in talks with the developers of Toolbox to provide its mod tools into the new redesign.
