Microsoft has announced that mixed reality content will come to its Xbox One and upcoming Project Scorpio consoles in 2018. The tech giant revealed the launch timing earlier this week at the Game Developer’s Conference (GDC) and outlined more details in a blog post.
A number of PC makers like Acer, Dell, HP and Lenovo, are planning to introduce Windows Mixed Reality headsets that will work across Windows 10 PCs, Xbox One and Project Scorpio. Acer’s Mixed Reality developer kit will ship later this month.
Following this, Microsoft will enable Windows Mixed Reality inside the Windows 10 Creators Update coming this spring. Microsoft also currently sells its own developer build of a mixed reality headset, the HoloLens, which sells for $4,000 CAD.
The company says that game developers interested in Windows Mixed Reality can sign up for ID@Xbox, with all other developers invited to check out the Windows Mixed Reality program page.
Project Scorpio was revealed at E3 2016 and is Microsoft’s next iteration of the Xbox, which it says will be the “most powerful console ever.” Little has been officially revealed about the system, but it’s said to run games in native 4K resolution.
