Google has announced that instant tethering is now available for Pixel devices and Nexus smartphones.
Compatible devices are able to automatically share cellular data via Wi-Fi when they’re signed in to the same Google Account. As an example, the tech giant says users are able to automatically connect a tablet to the Internet using the phone’s data connection.
The list of phones that are able to host instant tethering are the Pixel, the Pixel XL, the Nexus 6, the Nexus 5X, and the Nexus 6P running Android 7.1.1 and up
Phones and tablets that can automatically use shared data connections are the Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Pixel C, and Nexus 9 running Android 6.0 and up.
Instant tethering is activated in the Settings menu by tapping ‘provide data connection’ to set up a host device, or touching ‘get data connection,’ to share a connection from another device. After the initial setup, non-host devices will automatically connect to hosts whenever an internet connection is needed.
Manual tethering is also available via Wi-Fi hotspot, USB or Bluetooth.
