Get your own personal travel assistant with App in the Air [App of the Week]

Airports are one of my least favourite places. Sure, traveling is exciting, but it can also be uncomfortable and anxiety-inducing.

You have to worry about arriving at the airport on time, going through security and finding your gate — all while lugging around baggage that often contains some of your most valuable possessions.

Any app that could help me reduce that discomfort and anxiety, is an app that can reside on my home screen forever — and I may just have found it in App in the Air.

The title is a bit of a mouthful, but the app itself is user-friendly and intuitive, offering simple solutions to small but frustrating issues.

For example, App in the Air provides you with gate changes even if you are offline. No more worrying about spending data or turning on Wi-Fi for gate information when you’re abroad without a roaming solution — the app will text you updates instead.

It also delivers visual timelines for check-in, boarding, take off and landing — handy for those of us who feel near-constant trepidation about having potentially miscalculated the 24-hour time on the ticket.

Other tools include crowd-sourced in-airport navigation maps, airport tips and average lengths of time for procedures like check-in and security at the airport you’re currently frequenting.

A premium subscription to the app is $6.49 for five flights, $12.99 for 12 months and $38.99 for a lifetime. It includes automatic check-in, ticking one more to-do off of your pre-flight list.

The app is freely available on Google Play and App Store.
