Ubisoft Montreal-developed Watch Dogs 2 officially announced

After teasing the game’s announcement a few days ago, Ubisoft Montreal has officially announced Watch Dogs 2, as well as the game’s release date, November, 15th 2016 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Unlike the first game in the series which was set in Chicago, Ubisoft’s next title in the Watch Dogs series will take place in San Francisco, including areas of Oakland and the rest of Silicon Valley. While far from a completely original setting, Watch Dogs 2 taking place in Silicon Valley makes a lot of sense given the game’s emphasis on hacking and future technology.

Ubisoft Montreal describes its vision of San Francisco as “the wild west of technology” and says it’s placing an emphasis on constructing a virtual city that feels alive.

Aiden Pearce, the first Watch Dogs’ stoic but generally lifeless main character, has also been ditched in favour of Marcus Holloway, an Oakland native incorrectly accused of a crime by the series’ fictional ctOS 2.0 organization.

In the reveal trailer Marcus seems much more nimble than Aiden and is able to bound over objects Assassin’s Creed parkour style. He’s also a member Dedsec, the group that played a significant role in the first Watch Dogs.

While the original Watch Dogs was praised for attempting to reinvent the open world formula Grand Theft Auto established by injecting a heavy dose of technology into it, the game’s environments didn’t end up being as interactive as its early trailers touted. Hopefully Watch Dogs 2 more closely resembles Ubisoft’s original vision for the first Watch Dogs.

Watch Dogs is coming to the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on November 15th, 2016.
