Saskatchewan-based carrier SaskTel announced plans to invest $331 million CAD into the province to build out its network and services.
According to its press release, SaskTel states the investment “will ensure SaskTel customers in Saskatchewan continue to receive some of the best communications services in the world.”
The breakdown of funds for the 2016-2017 are as follows:
- $51.0 million in its Fibre to the Premises Program (FTTP)
- $45.9 million for wireless network enhancements
- $91.6 million to meet wireline network growth
- $19.6 million in expanding network capabilities
- $123 million to improve customer services
In terms of the wireless investment, SaskTel says it will focus its attention on expanding LTE network capabilities, so customers can download media and stream content faster. In addition, by the end of 2016-2017 SaskTel will have 2,380 free WiFi hotspots available to SaskTel.
A staggering 37 percent of the funds are going to supporting its customer service efforts and to complete the company’s data centre located in Saskatoon. SaskTel also notes in a recent press release that it will implement “a customer self-serve platform and an updated facilities management systems.”
The recent Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications (CCTS) mid-year report revealed that SaskTel had only 16 customer complaints.
At the end of Q1 2016, SaskTel had 618,083 wireless subscribers.
