Six months in, Android Marshmallow adoption at 7.5 percent

Google has updated its monthly look at Android distribution numbers, revealing that Marshmallow, the latest major release of its mobile operating system, is now on 7.5 percent of devices.

This is an increase of 2.5 percent from April. In comparison, Lollipop had a 5% adoption rate in April 2015.

Google’s data indicates previous versions of Android are still relatively strong in adoption, with Lollipop grabbing the most attention by powering 35.6 percent of devices, a slight decrease from last month at 35.8 percent.

The branded-flavour KitKat is holding its ground at 32.5 percent of Android users visiting the Google Play Store. Android OS 4.1 Jelly Bean dropping quickly and is now on 20.1 percent of devices, which is a decrease of 2.3 percent from last month. Froyo, Gingerbread, and Ice Cream Sandwich all have a combined total of 4.3 percent of Android devices.

Several Canadian smartphones have received the latest update to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, specifically the Note 4, Galaxy S5 and LG G3 and G.

Google I/O is coming up later this month and promises to bring a name to Android N, which is expected to be Android 7.0.
