Corning to give smartphone manufacturers option to put high-res images directly on Gorilla Glass

Corning, the maker of Gorilla Glass, has unveiled its latest product, a new version of its signature glass that enables manufacturers to put high-resolution images directly on their device.

The official name for the tech is Vibrant Corning Gorilla Glass. The company notes it is capable of using the glass to print customized designs directly on smartphones, tablets, and notebooks. The only indication of how Corning is able to accomplish this feat is through a “proprietary process” that involves “ink and equipment.”

Since Gorilla Glass is already scratch and shatter proof, it’s likely the goal of this product is to allow the company to go head-to-head with case manufacturers.

“Device manufacturers today are looking for new ways to differentiate their products, without compromising important features such as durability and clarity,” said Scott Forester, a director at Gorilla Glass. “Vibrant Corning Gorilla Glass provides a new opportunity for customized decoration and commercial branding and is one of several valuable product enhancements that leverage Corning’s core capabilities to meet the evolving needs of our customers.”

Corning first launched Gorilla Glass in 2007. The protective case material is now used by 40 brands across the globe and can be found on 4.5 billion devices worldwide.
