Netflix announced today that it plans to add 150 hours of content in a high-quality video format called High Dynamic Range (HDR) this year.
“While 4k offers more pixels, HDR offers better pixels that have greater depth, and on HDR screens you get brighter highlights, more detail in dark scenes, and a wider color range that more closely matches the real world,” said the online streaming service in a blog post.
Netflix also stated that the new HDR technology looks more true to life than any other video format. While this might sound like a challenge to 4K, the two technologies are in fact compatible. Many high-end 4K TVs can play content that is also HDR.
The first season of Macro Polo, a Netflix original, was the first HDR compatible piece of content launched on its platform. Soon other Netflix originals like Jessica Jones and Daredevil will also be available in HDR. Users will be able to watch in HDR if they have a TV that offers the feature, and an Ultra HD four-screen monthly plan, which is priced at $11.99.
