More Canadians than ever using mobile payment services, says report

Canadians are opening up to the idea of “tap and pay” payment methods. According to a statement sent to MobileSyrup, the number of contactless payments made by Canadian consumers increased by almost 109 percent in the first quarter of 2016. At the same time last year, increases were recorded at just 14 percent.

The report was compiled by Moneris, one of North America’s largest providers of payments processing services. According to Angela Brown, the CEO of Moneris, Canadian have quickly embraced the speed and convenience of simply tapping their cards.

This consisted of consumers tapping their cards using contactless-abled terminals or by holding up their smartphones to pay with a digital wallet like UGO or mobile payments solution like Apple Pay.

“This comfort on the part of consumers, coupled with the payment infrastructure we have built here in Canada, in which most terminals can accept contactless transactions, sets us up well to take advantage of the new mobile payment options entering the market,” Brown went on to say.

The MonerisMetrics Quarterly Report also revealed that Canadian consumer spending in general has increased by 6.4 percent in the first quarter of 2016.
