Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge now available in Canada

Canadians, the day has finally arrived.

After a short pre-order period, which apparently has apparently resulted in “stronger-than-expected” sales, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are available at carriers across the country.

As previously reported, pricing starts at $199 on contract and rises to $1,000 no-term. All models are the 32GB version of the device.. The Galaxy S7 comes in Black or Silver, while the Galaxy S7 edge is only available in Black (see the complete list of carrier availability and pricing here).

In addition, both the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge can be purchased unlocked at any of the Samsung’s Experience Store locations, which are located in Metrotown (British Columbia), Richmond Centre (British Columbia), West Edmonton (Edmonton), Sherway Gardens (Toronto). However, we are hearing that there is a ‘global shortage’ of the Galaxy S7 edge.

Update: Costco.ca is also selling the GS7 and GS7 edge unlocked. Similar to the Samsung Experience Stores, Costco notes, “Requires a microSIM card (not included). Once a SIM card is installed, the phone is then locked to that carrier. Unlock codes are available from Samsung Customer Support.” (Thanks, Roy!)

I’m still in “Shipped” for my pre-order from Rogers.

Waiting for them to tell me to come pick it up!

    • ToniK

They won’t… at least they didn’t call me at all. I went to the store yesterday afternoon, and told them about my reserve. The Rep was like ‘Oh right, let me get that for you.’ and voila. Gear VR and Edge Black in hand. Never got any courtesy call to notify me that they were holding it.

    • Zul Rizvi

I did get a call from rogers store to pick it up

  • KiwiBri

    waiting for my call..

    • norsem4n

      Black edge?

    • KiwiBri

      yep 🙂

    • Jac

      Did your call come?

    • norsem4n

Not for me yet, still “Shipped”. No call.

    • Jac

I got my phone call that the phone came into the store, but Bell’s website hasn’t updated.

I’m sure its there and their processing it?

    • norsem4n

Should I go to the Rogers store to inquire? They’re pretty lazy and it would be nice to pick it up before the weekend starts.

    • KiwiBri

Nope. Went by the store. Seems that bestbuy can’t do it for freaking Corp accounts and Bell want them to sell an in market plan. So.. Fark it, buy it from the Samsung store I guess. Gear VR will be $49 now I guess. Not giving up my 6GB data and voice for $55 plan

  • Distract2

they only sold 1 presale so far at my local BB. They will need to drop the price in Canada IMO.

    • KrispyInTO

The samsung store at Sherway Gardens had a line up for people picking up pre orders.

    • KiwiBri

I might get one from there. At least it won’t be carrier locked right?

    • southerndinner

It’s locked when sim is inserted but they’ll give you an unlock code for free

    • Vito R.

Phones lock to the first SIM that’s inserted. According to the Samsung sales guys “new rules that you’re not allowed to sell unlocked phones in Canada” hahaha. He couldn’t explain why Apple sells unlocked phones and then suggested it was probably a Samsung policy. Nice.

Anyway, I picked mine up yesterday night. It was from a “new batch” so there was no unlock code available for my device. I was told I would be emailed withing the next 3 (business?) days with my unlock code.

I spend over a grand on a new phone and they manage to make it fell like I’m buying from a grey market reseller. Nice.

    • Techguru86

Welcome to Non Apple and Nexus devices, they kiss butt with the carriers

    • Vito R.

There’s actually more than a few phones your can buy unlocked – Asus, Moto, etc.

This seems more like a Samsung issue, they probably just flashed all their phones the same way to save a bit of time.

    • Techguru86

Moto X play has amazing battery life

    • KiwiBri

I went to Sherway. No S7 Edges left. )only those for preorder). Guy I spoke to didnt know about the promo to buy a Gear VR for $49 when buying an S7.
First time at a Samsung store.
I got screwed with my preorder at BestBuy – they couldnt upgrade me as I had a corp account.
BUT i checked online today and I can upgrade my phone on bell and looks like I can keep my old plan too. Nice. Now if the phone comes from bell not sim locked, I can throw in my RObbers SIM and continue.
Will pick up a Gear VR from kijiji when the market is flooded.
The savings on my monthly plan still makes it worth while to pay outright for some things

    • Vito R.

Samsung was giving the GearVR & 128GB MicroSD card away with pre-orders.

The GearVR deal is probably Best Buy only.

Don’t count on the Bell version being unlocked…

    • KiwiBri

I couldn’t get out to Sherway before then to preorder – oh well. (Did they close the Yorkdale store?)
Anyway, I believe the phones come unlocked then when SIM is inserted it becomes carrier locked. The Samsung Store will provide an unlock code. I expect the BELL phones to act the same. I’ll just put in a Robbers SIM.
If I could get the same plan on BELL I’d actually move to BELL from Robbers. BELL and TELUS seem to have better penetration in Buildings and Malls I find compared to Robbers

    • KiwiBri

On the Samsung they say gear VR for $49 on new Activations. I wonder if I buy from BELL and Activate the phone I can get the Gear VR for $49 ?
I’m travelling to the US next week, and in a different year when $USD was on par I would have just got it there. (No Sales tax in the State I’m going to)

    • Distract2

I guess people have more money in your area

    • KiwiBri

      Really wow.

    • southerndinner

Stores in my mall were absolutely packed with S7 buyers. Way busier than the S6 and S5 launches.

    • Distract2

where is it ? Oh, and still only one sale at my local BB, the same pro-order.

  • Nexitus

Why is it that Wind’s model is literally $100 cheaper?

    • KiwiBri

      Has half the radios

    • Adam Reinhardt

Cuz you’re getting it on a WindTAB then

  • avikingdj

Somehow I dropped 5 spots from yesterday to today in the queue with Rogers.
How the heck does that happen?

  • rgruia

Bummer! No Snapdragon 820 units in Canada? 🙁 Bit let down!

    • KiwiBri

Is it really noticeable in everyday use?

    • jay

Hate it too but we have to see what Roms we are getting

    • Techguru86

Pretty sure I read the Exynos doesn’t support custom rom’s

    • Adam Reinhardt

You want a Snapdragon over an Exynos? Wat

    • Vito R.

      Yeah, it’s mostly faster – so there’s that…

    • Techguru86

Didn’t I read that the Eynos processor doesn’t support rooting

    • jay

Because the phone withb the Samsung chip is selling everywhere else I think it the opposite. Does the old at&t version had a locked bootloader?

  • 魔鬼

    Does this have Quickcharge 3.0?

    • norsem4n

      I think you’re confused. It is 2.0. 3.0 doesn’t exist?

    • Vito R.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 supports Quick Charge 3 but it’s not enabled in the S7.

    • Adam Reinhardt

And Canada doesn’t have a Snap 820 in it so..

    • Vito R.

      Who said anything about Canada?

We were specifically talking about Quick Charge 3 and the 820 so…

    • manpreet singh

no it doesn’t . Samsung said the difference from 2.0 to 3.0 isn’t huge.

    • Zul Rizvi

S7 and S7 edge dosent support quick charge 3.0

  • norsem4n

Using it now, amazing phone! I can’t wait to put some memory in it for videos/photo taking! 😀

    • Vito R.

Rear camera is good, but front camera still suffers from its terrible wide angle lens which makes your head look ridiculous when taking a selfie.

I also find lots of unintentional screen touches happening due to the curved edges.

Otherwise, it’s a really solid phone so far.

    The Edge looks pretty fantastic!

The West Edmonton Mall Samsung Experience Store will receive Gold and Titanium GS7 edge phones on March 28th.

    • jay

      Jealous

  • slayerizer

I see the price is really high right now. Do you guys expect the price to go down this year or it will stay like that. I didn’t follow the S6 price, so I don’t know what to expect. Thanks

  • ammanerz

Considering that the s7 is basically unfixable (at least for average DIY-ers), do Samsung experience stores have ‘Samsung care’?

They really need to get on that if they’re gonna sell $1000 sealed phones.

  • norsem4n

Does anyone know if the LED case from Samsung allows Qi wireless to still work without having to take the phone from the case each time I want to wirelessly charge it?

  • Shaggyskunk

Does anyone know if the Bootloader is locked in the Canadian variant? Currently the Bootloader is locked on the Tmo version…
