Playstation VR release window slips to second half of 2016, according to Gamestop CEO

Sony will release its Playstation VR headset in the second half of 2016, according to GameStop CEO Paul Raines.

In a televised interview with Fox Business, Raines talked about his company’s VR ambitions, which is where he let news of the release window slip. “We are right now preparing for the launches of the major VR products. So we’re now in discussions with Oculus, with HTC Vive, and with Sony,” he said in the interview. He later added, “We will launch the Sony product this fall, and we are in discussions with the other two players.”

If the timeframe Raines provided to Fox Business is accurate, it means the Playstation VR is set to miss its previously stated release window. Last year, Sony said it planned to launch the accessory, previously known as Project Morpheus, in the first half of 2016. With March quickly approaching, and no news on an official price or pre-order window from Sony, it’s looking less and less likely the highly anticipated console VR headset will make that target.

Of course, without confirmation from Sony, this news, even coming from a source as well-positioned as Raines, is still speculation. GameStop, it should be noted, operates stores throughout Canada and is notable for its resale of used games, and is one of the biggest retail entities in the video game industry.
