Aviva now offers ride-sharing insurance in Ontario

Insurance broker Aviva Canada now offers ride-sharing coverage in Ontario.

While popular ride-sharing services such as Uber are battling city councillors and Taxi owners, Aviva says it’s simply responding to the need to “protect both passengers and drivers.”

The inclusion of the coverage is an add-on to the company’s personal auto policy and is only available to drivers who spend up to 20 hours a week ride-sharing. As previously reported, Aviva notes the cost is calculated by the time spent ride sharing, as well as location and driving record. According to Aviva’s website, a monthly add-on will cost approximately $937.50 with an annual Aviva auto premium of $1,500.

If you’re not in Ontario, Aviva says it will be working with regulators across the country to make ride-sharing coverage available in other provinces over the next few months.

In addition, Aviva took a neutral stance on profiting from the sector, stating the company “takes no position on the regulatory or public policy questions raised by ride-sharing, which are best left to elected government officials. Nor does Aviva’s decision to offer any insurance product in the marketplace constitute an endorsement of any company or any individual protected by our products.”
