LG’s new K-series Android devices practice safe specs

LG K10

At CES 2016 today, LG revealed its new K-series line of mid-range smartphones. The devices are meant to be the successor to the company’s L series, which originally launched back in 2014 to take on the growing demand for mid-range Android devices.

The first two handsets revealed so far in the K series are the K10 and K7. The K10 features a 5.3-inch 720p display, a 2,300 mAh battery, Android 5.1 Lollipop, and comes in three different colours: white, indigo and gold. Technical specifications, mainly the smartphone’s processor, will reportedly vary depending on which country the device is purchased in.

The LTE version of the K10 comes equipped with a 13 megapixel rear camera, while the 3G version is stuck with an 8 megapixel shooter. Likewise, the front-facing camera comes in at either 8 megapixels or 5 megapixels, respectively. The smartphone’s RAM ranges from 1GB to 2GB depending on the configuration, while internal storage comes in at 8GB or 16GB. The K10’s four CPU options are as follows: the LTE K10 features either a 1.2 GHz or 1.3 GHz quad-core chip, or a 1.14 GHz octa-core. The 3G K10 will also have a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor.

LG’s other budget device, the LG K7, comes equipped with a 5-inch 854×480 pixel display, a 2,125mAh battery, 5 megapixel front camera, and Android 5.1 Lollipop. Similar to the K10, the smartphone’s technical specifications vary significantly depending on which version is purchased.

The LTE K7 comes equipped with a 1.1 GHz quad-core CPU while the 3G version utilizes a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor. The camera’s main shooter is either 8 megapixels or 5 megapixels, while RAM measures in at 1GB or 1.5GB. Built in storage options include 8GB or 16GB. The LTE model of the K7 will reportedly only be available in a colour LG calls “Titan.” The 3G version will come in white, black and gold.

“With design cues borrowed from nature, the K10 and K7 look far more expensive and exclusive than they really are,” says the company.

Besides the display tech, LG has also choose to highlight its new phones’ photo-taking capabilities.

For anyone who thought Motorola’s double twist to gesture was a weird one, LG has seemingly one-upped one of its competitor. Both the K10 and K7 also include the company’s Gesture Shot feature. To take a selfie, the user can lift their hand in front of the phone and clench their fist. Doing so twice tells the phone to take a four shots one after another.

Perhaps the only remarkable thing about these phones is how many variants of the same device LG is creating. Per-region variants are nothing new in the smartphone world, but the Korean giant is taking things to the extreme with the K7 and K10.

It’s unclear if either of these smartphones will make their way to Canada but we’ve reached out to LG for clarification and will update this post when we know more.
