The Final Fantasy franchise has always been a divisive series. Some, like myself, cite FF VI as their favourite, while others insist the incredibly popular FF VII is the best in the franchise. Then there is the vocal group who feel Final Fantasy IX, the last Final Fantasy game released on Sony’s original PlayStation, is the best the series has to offer.
Final Fantasy IX fans will be pleased to hear that Square Enix has plans to bring the game to PC and smartphones at some point in 2016. A North American release has not been announced yet, but it’s safe to assume that the game will make its way here because all past Final Fantasy mobile ports have received U.S. releases.
It’s still unclear how much Square Enix plans to charge for the game, but given the premium price tag the company attaches to its previous Final Fantasy rereleases, it will likely fall somewhere in the $12 to $20 range.
The screenshots released so far of Final Fantasy VI show off a sharpened, higher-resolution polygonal visuals. It looks like Square Enix has opted to stick with the game’s original art style and has no plans to alter Final Fantasy IX’s graphics like it did with Final Fantasy VI’s mobile release.
Final Fantasy IX is set to be released for iOS, Android and PC.
